Dear STW Hive Mind

Hatter Jnr (9) has killed the kiddie headphones we bought him for his MP3 player ages back and I'm on the the hunt for new ones.

The issue is that he has fondness for volume that means that giving him some 'normal' adult phones means he'll be deaf as a post within a month and the only 'volume limited' ones I can see are nasty plasticy ones for tiny kids that sound terrible and are so quiet they're barely functional.

Is there anything out there that's in the middle? Decent sound quality but that won't allow the lttle darling to ruin his hearing? I've found little plug in 'volume limiters' but I know he'll whip them off the second he thinks we're not looking.

Thanks

The source limits the volume. It's an EU directive, or an old charter or something.

I was about to suggest some Sony £35 quid jobbies that I've found to be excellent but as cougar said the sound is ultimately limited by the amp(phone in this case I guess to protect kids ears).

But these are very good after a recommendation from here and still going strong https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/in-ear-headphones/mdr-ex650ap

Edit... Christ they are £60 now.. I'm sure I only paid about £35 for them a few years ago!?

Might be worth checking these out:

I’ve got Mee Audio earphones, and they’re really very good, I can’t seem to find them on Amazon U.K., though it shouldn’t be a problem getting them from Amazon.com

I do like Skullcandy but the volume limited kids ones are wired.

Cassette are good but I use Grind and they are superb.

Takstar Pro 82 are the best value for the price range you'll find.

The source is the volume limiter. Buying an EU sold unit, rather than an import will come with limited firmware. Your kid could flash it to international though. You can buy expensive high-ohm headphones and a source that can't put out enough. That'll be quiet.

I got some Betron in ear phones for c£10. I'd say they are better than the brass Sony ones above which I also have.

My minions have been using headphones from Puro Sounds for the last 5 or so years. They’re expensive but seem bulletproof and can be used for Bluetooth or wired connections. They’ve not got the notice cancelling ones as they weren’t available then but the normal BT2200 ones have enough noise isolation that the volume limit hasn’t annoyed them on planes or on a car journey when I’m listening to something on the radio.

May get him those AKG's and have a long talk about not blowing is ears to pieces.

Considering I spent my 20's at metal and hardcores gigs I'm fully aware of the irony.

Thanks for the suggestions all.
