so are you supposed to use them in conjunction with a scart lead or do they replace the scart lead?

Replace. Plus, don't spend £30 on one, get the cheapest £1.70 one off ebay as the expensive ones don't make a difference.

Replace. Just make sure you get a directional one...

And it has to be the right colour. That makes a difference to the picture quality. ?

😆

The Length has to be an exact multiple of the the size of your screen too, otherwise you get voltage standing wave ratio issues and a bad impedance match.

Or some other complete rubbish.... 😛

The directional ones are better but it's such a faff swapping them round between recording something and playback.

HDMI can carry video and sound so replaces SCART, and as others have said, you don't gain anything from expensive cables (other than, arguably, build quality). I'm running with Tesco Value ones at a fiver a pop.

The one caveat to that is, if you have Sky HD and a surround amp, it only put stereo out over HDMI (for reasons best known to itself). So you'll need an optical cable for 5.1. This is a quirk of the Sky box though, everything else should be fine.

Generally agree re posts on quality - only exception imo is on longer runs (eg to a projector) where a better quality one would be wise. Signal will degrade/go out of sync on longer runs with a nasty cable.
