Absolutely this. As the father of an 11yr old boy, it’s my responsibility to help him navigate the next few years and hopefully come out the other end a decent, caring human being. Wish me luck…

It’s sort of a problematic thing about the social media bubbles, we actually don’t realise what other people/friends family/kids are being exposed to in their social media streams unless we have very similar interests to theirs.
This being hi lighted in the Brexit referendum of the various Facebook adds being selectively target to various groups,(like animals then leave the eu to have better animal protection etc). We only saw what had been used after the fact.

I agree that Individuals filled with hate have always existed, however what our ubiquitous social media does is allow their views to propagate on a mass scale and therefore seed (create) other hateful individuals by giving weight to their distorted beliefs. People aren’t born hateful they pick that up in their lives. Social media a hugely amplified version of the individual with megaphone in the town square. The trouble is that social media is poorly moderated and the people preaching hate don’t get booted out as fast as they might in the old town square.

I speak as a Farther to girls, who have to go to school with other kids (male and female), all of whom are very much online and being overtly targeted by an unregulated "influencer" industry. I've no doubt AT has reached someone within my own kids sphere and and marred their world view. Some influencers just want to flog make-up or footwear, others want to work on kid's insecurities and sell them "supplements" and "courses" it's a murky, capitalist fever dream.
Influencers are of course all narcissistic parasites, some obviously worse than others, but this is the world we've collectively slipped into creating for our kids to grow up in. My most challenging decision was figuring out a good place to stash a hedge-pron windfall, browser histories and parental monitoring was not yet a thing. My teenage years passed with relatively little parental interfering but there wasn't an internet full of alt-right nutters, influencers and bots trying to mess with my simpleton brain...
I'm affraid the old "I blame the parents" line is a bit redundant now, the thirty minutes of daily input you will get with your son by the time he's thirteen will pale into nothingness Vs the 8+ hours of his attention that tiktok and YT will score.
My advice (if you want it) stay quiet, keep your eyes and ears open and look at the sort of friends they make and what interests they take up, that's about the only indication you're likely to get on how they're developing as young people...

Thanks for the tips. He doesn’t have any sort of online presence at the moment. Any that does occur in the future will be closely monitored until he can show he is capable of self policing. At 13 there will be no Tik Tok and YouTube usage will be monitored too. It’s one area that I’ll be very tight in tbh. My social media bubble is here so no chance of crossover!
Luckily he takes after his mum more than me. That should hopefully make him slightly easier to deal with as a teenager. If he ends up like me (god forbid) then he’ll have to work very hard to get anything by me. I pretty much wrote the book on rebellious toe rag behaviour. He’s had a much better and more stable upbringing than me so far which is good.

Ha, mostly, thanks - he has his moments! It's a difficult world now for teenagers, we just have to role model and promote positive behaviours towards others, kids learn what they live and see around them...
When junior was about 14 junior he crashed my computer with virus that required a lot of effort to sort out. The Internet history that led to the crash introduced me to a world that I was as unaware of as AT before this thread. As Cougar alludes, it doesn't mean that they think what they view is acceptable to "normal" people in the "real" world. "Most people" have the ability to make the distintion between fantasy and reality, and actors acting and "normal" people living. The problem with social media is that kids can contribute and it becomes part of their "real" world and normalised. A bit like STW, nobody in the real world can be that interested in car tyres can they !

I’ve just read that ‘calmdownben’ piece, and his dismissal of Thunberg’s part rings slightly hollow when he says this:
