You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So, I've got an old set of sonos speakers - Play1 and Play3 from 2015/16 ish. So, I've got a fair bit of use out of them but they're nowhere near being knackered.
However, I recently had to change my internet provider and the new router doesn't let me use my old password (this has been a saga in itself!) and now I can't get my sonos speakers to connect.
They don't have bluetooth so the new Sonos app doesn't work as it just doesn't find.
I can connect to one speaker via ethernet, but as soon as I unplug the ethernet it's lost and I can't get the other speaker on.
Then I had a brainwave and thought I'll use the old Sonos S1 controller, but that tells me to download the app that I'm using to continue. Literally pointless.
I've factory reset.
I've created a new account.
I've pressed all the buttons in all the orders and nothing.
I've been trying to sort this out for about 4 days now and I'm nowhere close.
Send help.
Do they require 2.4GHz and the new router is kicking out 5GHz perhaps?
Does Sonos have a support helpine?
They still work. Or should. I have phoned the helpline before and they were incredibly helpful. Talked me through various re-sets which did the trick.
I’m sure there’s a legacy Sonos app for the older stuff and I thought it was the S1.
Yeah it's the 'Sonos S1 Controller' app. So maybe that's what they've tried already?
Yeah, I was trying with the S1 controller app and the app kept telling me to download the app rather than doing anything useful, which was really annoying.
I've already tried the 2.4GHz as well with no luck.
Good to hear that the Sonos helpdesk was useful - guess that's my next port of call!
Not ideal but perhaps you could get a 3rd party router thats flexible with your password and can be set to work with your ISP. Or you might be able to use the old router as a repeater (I know some can be set up this way)
Both those speakers are compatible with both apps, but to use with S1 you need to downgrade them using the S2 app (doesn’t sound like you want to do this, but does explain why S1 prompts you to download S2). Source: https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/sonos-s2-compatibility
I would delete both the S1 and S2 apps. Factory reset then unplug both speakers.
Install the Sonos S2 app.
Follow the instructions to add the play:1.
Assuming it still doesn’t work, get onto their support. I think they have phone and live chat.
Play1 and play3 are both "current" models and the normal app is all you should need.
I wouldn't touch the legacy app as there should be no need.
(AFAIR you set up one speaker with its own WiFi, connect to it with your phone then connect the speaker to your house WiFi.)
You'll get there.
