I trapped then end of my middle finger last Friday in a ridiculously heavy door. The nail has gone black and it hurt like an absolute b’stard. I’ve stopped being a baby about it and the pain has gone, but so has all of the feeling from the last joint to the tip. Have I killed the end of my finger?
I know in the grand scheme of The World this is the most trivial of situations, but it does feel like somebody else is picking my nose.
So, a question to all other finger damagers, does the feeling come back or is that it?
I crushed a finger under a tree doing some trail work. I have feeling in it but it's very sensitive to cold now.
Cut rather than crush but for me the feeling came back slowly, very slowly. Been the same for a couple of body parts, a couple of years later they are pretty much back to normal
Sliced the top off the first finger on my right hand in a disc brake caliper a couple of years back ( yeah I know !)..stitched up and has grown back to almost normal ..but there is a dead spot and the skin is very hard and sometimes sheds ..so my answer is ..dont know ..keep your fingers crossed ...err maybe not !
Can take months for nerves to recover (if they recover)
I lost the feeling / movement in both legs from the knees down a few years back. Took about 5 months before I was able to walk properly without big calf length orthotics. But for most of that time there was no indication whether it would ever improve.
Drilled a 4mm hole through the end of my finger about 3 years ago, was painful for about 12 months, Nail fell off and grew back OK, still got very little sensation at the entry point.
I cut a slice off the end of my left thumb about 20 years ago.
Still have a numb spot about the size of a 5p piece.
I did the same when I was 14 but chopped the end of my finger clean orff. (sic).
Skin graft to repair and it still feels like a pad on a dogs paw.
The doctor who did it stunk of whisky - claims direct perhaps.....
It'll probably take about 3 months for sensation to return - I managed to get full-tissue damage due to extreme cold in the arctic and that's how long it took for my finger-tips to recover. If you've severed the nerve, it might not recover.
Get it X-rayed, there's a good chance it's fractured
cant feel a thing in the tip of my finger. But then I dont have a tip no more 🙁
I lost the top half of my left hand long finger about 6 months ago, using a table saw, the wood climbed the blade as I was pushing it against the fence and somehow as it reached the end of the cut my finger was underneath, it basically exploded the end of my finger and took the top of the bone as well. I had to have plastic surgery to put it back together.
Removing the first dressing was one of the worst experiences of my life and I just wanted to cry.
Now it is just has no feeling and I have a shorter finger, I guess it reminds me to take care.
Cutting my fingernail is interesting it's now a strange shape and feels weird.

This and be ready to do finger excercises to reduce swelling and to create flexibility back to finger once healed.
Talking from experience, my one finger that has screws in only gets a pita when in silly cold or silly hot conditions or trying to hold a cup of tea at the handle. But this is a finger that was literally hanging off at end.
My pinky on same hand that had a fracture and self healed no screws was a reet pita down a long rocky descent on the mtb other week but then I realise I had my pikes on middle pedal setting, dunno that the lesser vibes would have helped that much tbh.
But just remember to if it is a fracture that to reduce swelling and bring back flexibility in it, is best to keep up doing the excercises.
As for nerve damage that I encounter, it's due to surgery to fit screws. Be prepared for sharp achey finger once fracture has healed.
Fell off 3 times last year in the ice, each time landing on the same exact patch of arse; I now have no feeling in my lower right butt cheek.
No problem with movement as I only trapped the end 10mm of it so I don't think that it is broken, however the numbness extends down to the first joint (approx. 20mm).
The finger is a little flatter then I usually like it and the nail is the colour of a plumb.
But like I said, in other parts of the world people are getting shot dead at pop concerts. I was just wondering if the sensation would come back.
I had surgery on my shoulder about 20 years ago that has left the whole area from the top of my bicep to my neck feeling numb.
These tales of woe are making me feel less bad about sitting in minor injuries having gone over on my ankle 'well' enough that I had to pop it back into place by punching my foot while lying in a crumpled heap on the floor screaming.
It was like a shit version of the dislocated shoulder scene in lethal weapon.
Riiiiight so basically a question that noone can really answer.
Wait it out I guess.

I was just wondering how others had got on after slamming a front door on their own hand.

There is no dignity to be had in a relocation.
Yeah sure! I'm guessing standard usual pain.
I suggest either spideying up or go to minor injuries.
Stay 8)

Put a hot needle through the top of your nail and into the blister below.
That hurts like ****, so if you can't feel that...

Thank you for that laugh:-) The doctor has prodded my ankle ignored my sharp intake of breath and asked me if it hurt.
I'm awaiting an x-ray. Why do families need to bring all Thier kids? Surely ma or pa could've stayed at home with the uninjured ones?
For anyone who cares. X-rays revealed degeneration of the ankle joint.
Fracture Clinic tomorrow morning
Message to WCA tomorrow afternoon, probably...
