Have I killed my frogs*?

*not a vile euphemism. Actual frogs. Hopefully not actually dead.

We put a pond in the garden last autumn. This year the FiL decided that he no longer wanted his own pond, so we took that too. Whilst emptying it we caught upwards of 50 frogs and a bucket full of spawn. This was then transferred to our pond, which has plants in it and was filled with rain water.

However… Since putting 4 buckets of the slippery little gets in we’ve hardly seen them. For a day or so there was the occasional head popping up, but in the last 2 weeks nothing.

So…
a) Do they largely live under water and out of site?
b) Are they sulking?
c) Have they ****ed off?
d) Have they all died?

I put a pond in last year, no frogs yet but I live in hope. If your pond has only been active since autumn it's possible that it hasn't has time to develop the beginnings of a food chain which the frogs will be part of so they may have gone in search. Alternatively, have you seen any herons? They will clear out a pond before moving on.

Wait for a rainy night and go out into the garden. We have lots of frogs but other than the floating frog house tilting we seldom see them except on rainy nights.

I haven't seen a live frog this year, but we have spawn and tadpoles hatched and I cleared out a dozen or so adult frogs when I renovated over the winter (moved from one pond to the other). The frogs themselves are pretty much dormant and hidden this time of year though they obviously had a couple of nights of fun a while back!

You know how often, people dig a pond and then inexplicably frogs appear in it as if they've teleported there? Well you were at the other end of the frog wormhole
