Over the last few days had a toe joint hurt when walking, not the end but more back in the middle foot? Doesn't hurt to touch, move etc only when putting weight on it.
Never had it before, but currently having chemo and a bucket of chemicals so likely a result of that.
Obviously not seeking a medical opinion on here! Just interested to know what gout might feel like from those that know!
but currently having chemo and a bucket of chemicals so likely a result of that.
Isn't nerve damage in the feet sometimes a side effect of chemo?
Possibly but probably not. The pain sounds too mild.
Your GP can arrange a blood test to diagnose definitively.
Gout would most likely be in the big toe joint and would definitely be sore to touch. When I've had it bad you couldn't even tolerate a bed sheet touching it at night.
Maybe request a blood test for urate levels which would confirm one way or other
My MiL when on chemo was given something (allopurinol) to remove excess uric acid - also used to treat gout
Thanks all.
Yes, speaking to Dr/Nurse as well of course. Was just curious about generic gout symptoms as never had it!
Onwards and upwards!
Regular blood screening for chemo patients should pick up urate problems, which are caused by the cancer drugs basically blitzing loads of cells, and the body having to clear up the mess. As mentioned above, allopurinol is sometimes added to the cocktail to stop that rising too high. Definitely worth a mention.
If stroking the sore area, poking it or massaging it is nice / soothing, it’s not gout.
My GP diagnosed my gout some 15 years ago asking if "this hurts"? as he touched my big toe joint. Chuckling at my cries of pain he diagnose "you have gout!"
It really is the worst pain known to man!
Allopurinol sorts it out in no time at all.
Chemo brought on gout for me, I'm on Allopurinol now. In fact I was preventively out on it but I still had a bad attack as it takes a while to get into your system. You've said you are going to get the proper advice so that's cool.
Given you are getting proper advice, it might not be gout. As alluded to gout is a bit painful, it tends to come on during the night and classically in the big toe.
It's probably the most painful thing I've ever experienced and one of the most embarrassing. I mean, not being able to walk because your toe hurts, right?
If you know, you know though. 🙃
Good luck with the chemo mate. 👍
Classical gout will develop quickly to a peak over a few hours and lead to a red, warm, swollen joint which is painful at rest/overnight. This then persists for days. The joint is exquisitely tender to touch.
Went thrift a period of drinking 1.5 bottles of wine a night.
Had the weird toe pain a few times.
Ended up with kidney stones which is way more painful.
Good luck with the chemo! 😘
As others have said the pain is pretty bad. Having a duvet touch my toe was intolerable.
Weird things would set it off: normal beer was fine, but have 1 single bottle of warsteiner and that would be it, I’d be broken for a couple of days.
Hope the chemo goes well.
Had gout a few times and now on Allopurinol. The pain was ridiculous. As above about bed sheets, fortunately it was summer when I had it bad.
It would be a dull pain in the back ground that was bad anyway, then I would get a severe wave of pain that would literally make me scream out. I couldn't walk when I had really bad and had swelling so that I couldn't fit shoes on at one point!
I'm now pretty much vegetarian to combat it. Thinking of coming of the meds for a while to see if the diet change will sort it on its own....
Hope your chemo goes well.
Thanks all for the additional comments and wishes. Certainly doesn't sound like gout then, so more likely joint pain from treatment. Always fun to have a bit more insult to the injury.
Seeing consultants tomorrow anyway so all under control. And in future I'll know what to look out for when I refine my port and Stilton diet!
As above gout tends to be red and a little swollen
"Ended up with kidney stones which is way more painful. "
Pah! Kidney stones are a walk in the park compared to gout!
