Just turned on my phone (HTC Legend) to find this. Has the screen smashed, or what? Don't think it's been dropped, certainly not overnight- it was in my jeans pocket, and worked fine last night. There is a fairly large dark spot on the screen by the home key.

Have you tried the classic "switch it off, and back on again" remedy?
If that doesn't work, try a factory reset - it's a pain in the arse but it's better than having a buggered screen. The reset might do the trick.
If all else fails, it's warranty claim time!

Yes, everything still works ok, there seems to be a semi circular shadow in the bottom left hand corner, but I think that 's part of the wallpaper. So nobody yet thinks it's the lcd leaking or broken?

I would have thought you'd see funny patterns all over the screen if the LCD was leaking?
Yeah I'd have expected the screen to be a mess if it had failed. It does look distinctly like a blown backlight from here
It's not a backlight or LCD failure, since the Legend doesn't have either of these things!
It's an AMOLED screen. Still looks broken though.
