You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
The Easter holidays are now almost over but I have never experienced 2 weeks that seem to have taken this long....even when I was working 12 hour days....what the heck do people do in the summer holidays to prevent space-time discontinuity?
Park the kids in front of the TV?
We've shipped our daughter off to stay at the wife's and my parents this week (on different days of course!).
Nice and quiet at our house - a break from 13yr old teenage grunts and moods!
Last week we were at Legoland and the outlaws. I'm non-gender specific primary care person this week. Monday was a lazy day, yesterday a car problem prevented the planned family session at the velodrome but they played on the computer, watched TV and generally behaved while I cleaned and checked over 5 bikes.
Today my nine year old has a friend round. Chocolate cakes with chocolate icing have been made, they are currently doing craft stuff in the dining room. I will be hoovering through later. Again.
Tomorrow the friends dad is returning the favour!
13 year old is off to stay at a mates tonight, and not coming back till tomorrow night. So tomorrow morning I will be home alone with a selection of clean bikes.....hoping for a break in the rain. 😀
I've had the pleasure of trying to enforce a bit of exam revision and grade 5 music theory today to a pair of 13-year-olds who want to play Minecraft and watch Nickolodeon.
I've given up trying to get them out the door for exercise.
Ah yes, Grade 5 music theory. Apparently he's doing tbat in the autumn. Luckily one thing I never need to chase him for. Our cake maki g was accompanied by a bit of Handel this morning.
His sister's grade 2 practical though... 👿
We had a sleepover last night for our 8 year old daughter's birthday. Two schoolfriend's and the neighbours daughter who is 5 or 6. One of the friends had brought a DVD or maybe it was a present for the birthday girl but she announced, "I ALWAYS bring a DVD to sleepovers and we ALWAYS watch it.". Well not tonight buttercup so suck it up. I'm not having Adam Sandler in my house.
Mrs nobeer has taken this week off, I'm off next week. Canny wait, a whole week to mess about on the various local swimming pool, mess about on bikes, pub lunches and kite flying.
Not had a week off since last October.
not grade 5 music theory!!! argh!
i remember it well. and as a drummer, i wasn't at all happy about it 😆
What year do they do grade 5 music theory - I've heard nothing of this!!? (my daughter is in year 8).
Does she play an instrument? If you want to sit practical exams beyond grade 5, most boards will need her to have passed grade 5 theory to show you know the difference between your vivace and larghetto, or whatever.
It's a PITA, TBH.
...must be a Year 9 thing before choosing GSCE subjects. They just have a play on everything at the minute.
It isn't a school thing - these are extracurricular music exams.
Yeah, he does this for fun, not in school.
Grade 5 music practical and theory is apparently the equivalent of GCSE music. You need both to progress to Grade 6. He wants Grade 6 so he can audition for the county youth orchestra.
I'm tempted to get a DNA test. He didn't get his musical talent from me. I think his real dad should be doing his share of the costs and transporting around to rehearsals... 😉
i remember it well. and as a drummer, i wasn't at all happy about it
I thought they restricted it to musicians?
My own tale of doing this exam is pretty convoluted.
Didn't all the drummer gags go on the definitive joke thread?
Tomorrow night I will have the pleasure of having 2 out of four grandkids staying for the weekend. Mum(our daughter)is a primary school teacher and has a "pile of work" to do before returning to work next week. She has been ill most of the year and doctor ordered her to touch nothing and rest for a week, which she did last week. However she is just starting to stress out again!!!
On Sunday I collect the other 2 from dancing class, makes for 4 over the weekend. 2x 10yr olds, a 4 and 5yr old. 3 girls and 1 boy 😆 My son is off running around Kielder on Sunday and dil is workinng(nurse)
Craft box will be out and kitchen cleared for some cooking/baking. The older ones like to read so they disappear into a room.
I am having a fab time , digging veg beds or just deep holes , Lego, playground, scalextrix, train museum done , more garden wrecking tomorrow plus cinema and bike rides in the dark forest with digger world as a long stop.
I've just started 11 weeks off parental leave. It's waaayyyyy better than work, especially when being paid still.
Been the primary carer for my kids all their lives, they are 6 & 10 now.
Easter holidays is like any other holidays, just get them out for at least 2 or 3 hours each day.
Monday and Tuesday we were out on bikes. Today they were at Granny's. Tomorrow wife is off so we'll go for breakfast and then out for the day, Wales maybe.
Next week they'll have friends over for sleepovers so I'll take them all swimming or climbing somewhere, roller skating will figure prominently too I guess.
They'll spend a few hours a day Minecrafting and on their iPads but as long as we've been out and about that's fine, it just replaces TV anyway.
I love every minute of it. I've entertained them every school holiday they've ever had.
Pic from yesterday...

Big thumbs up for you Lodders!
Stayed at home over Easter weekend, Tue to Sat away in the caravan at FOD, so plenty of outdoor stuff.
This week the Wife's between Uni terms so has been around, but I think even they are glad to be going back tomorrow.
Dreading Christmas, they break up on 16th December this year.!!!
I was off with ours Good Friday until this Monday gone.
They are pretty good but do have their moments. Despite the sibling bickering, I generally have a great time with them. Usually have one day trip out for activities of some kind, a Lego day, cycling day and a games day. Also visits to park or going swimming etc... Sometimes hard to get the little beasts out - but enjoy most of our days together. Usually a good reminder of why parenting can be great!
I did the whole of the last half term. Took her to stay with my mum for three days.
Easter holidays are next week for two weeks. Mrs North is taking the first week off to look after Miss North but is then teaching (university lecturer) for part of the following week and I have to be back in London as part of the welcoming party for the new MD. So Mrs North's mum will have her instead.
The worst thing about having an only child during hols is the need to have her little friends around - somehow my house has to sustain increasing levels of destruction and my disciplining is reduced to "a firm word" or the odd stare.
With a 1 year old and a 5 year old it's a pain. The little un seems to need constant attention, be it food or sleep. He can literally eat for an hour; clearing his plate and his sister's left overs. Then it's time for sleep! If that doesn't happen then He's a mardy sod until the next meal time.
Forgot to mention he was up at 4 this morning, so the 'routine' is ****ed
And with that, I'm off to work!
I'm on 6 months paternity leave here in Sweden and take care of the two children. A 6 month old and a three year old. It's hard work but it is fantastic fun. The oldest will be returning to day care soon for 15 hours a week, mainly to have more interaction with other children. Then I will really be able to get on with building bikes as the baby just sleeps outside all day . Thumbs up!
We just moved house. Over the Easter holidays, with a 10 week old and 5yr old with autism. Whilst working night shifts.
I can now tackle anything. Apart from all that again.
I did it for the first four and a half years.. The novelty soon wears thin as children are completely egocentric and are born looking for weaknesses to exploit
It nearly broke me
Child number two has extremely challenging behaviour which clashes terribly with child number one, it's the inter personal politics that's unbearable..
My kids are absolute gems compared to many too! 🙂
I'm down to four days per week now and starting to regain my sanity..
Hats off indeed, I have no idea how single parents survive

Hats off to you. That sounds like hard work!
^^^ +1.
I really can't complain in comparison and it certainly beats working.

This: I have no idea how they do it!
Had all 3 (5, 3 and 1) of ours yesterday - 11-1 while she got her hair bouffanted; then bedtime and beyond from 7.30-11.
I need to get my vasectomy booked.
I've been doing this for 6 years now.
Yeah - just pack in lots, but not necessarily always organised activities. Sometimes just informal plays in the woods with mates is all you need to do. Yesterday we had 6 kids (not all mine - I have 2) out just mucking about in the woods. They'd still be there now if it wasn't for hunger and lack of daylight.
Now they are off for a morning of tennis. Good value for 1/2 a day and I'm doing some work. Tomorrow - hill reps...muhahaha 🙂 😉 (or just a ride round the local woods)
Hats off indeed, I have no idea how single parents survive

Tag team mrs_oab and I struggle at times.
Mind, we did decide to be outnumbered by sprogs....
As Loddrik said above, our lads are like dogs, you have to 'walk' them a few ours outdoors and physical every day. The argument/faff/prep/cleanup is always worth it for the rest of the day. It's good for myself and mrs_oab as well - we are better parents because of some activity outdoors. As they get older, even moreso.
We are now starting to see independence appear - coming home from school by themselves, heading off with pals for the day etc.
