Not tuned into the news for a while now. Have been happy keeping myself busy with my own "problems".
Just looked on the German Süd Deutsche newspaper app and seen that death figures for the UK are just behind Italy. No doubt, by tomorrow evening the UK will be leading Europe the macabre death toll table.
Why?
Everyone saw what was happening in Italy and had plenty of time to act. **** me, even the mayor of Bergamo, one of Italy's hardest hit cities has had his daughter flown home from the UK as he fears for her safety....!
Apathy? Ignorance?
And it doesn't appear to me that UK media is shouting loudly about the government's ineptitude. Even the Guardian seems happy enough to point fingers at Bolsonaro and Trump whilst singing the praises of Captain/Corporal Tom Moore and the NHS instead of talking about the government response.
Will heads roll?
Will they ****.
A number of issues meant the UK government was slow to react
1) - libertarian ethos we don't tell people what to do
2) - anti europe we don't want to get involved in europe wide schemes
3) Johnson on holiday
4) - Inadequate planning
5) - dimwits in government
I suspect actually in the fullness of time it will be seen how badly out government performed - allowing the Football match in liverpool ad cheltenham festival to go ahead was wrong
Edit - they will also be in legal trouble under health and safety legislation
I don't think total number of deaths tell the whole story due to different countries having different sized populations, you needs to look at deaths per million of population and In that measure the UK is a lot lower than France and Italy.
Using this measure the US (which has a very high total deaths number) is doing a lot better than the UK.
UK is a lot lower than France and Italy.
With all due respect, that's balls.

UK is ahead of France and not far behind Italy.
The US is also an enormous country with a very low population density, with few people who travel round the world. A fairer comparison would between New York state and the UK.
London is the center of the world, with millions of people endlessly coming in and out of it, covering huge distances the whole time.
I don't think our government has handled this well, but most comparisons are apple to oranges.
And you also have to consider how each country is recording their stats as they all seem to differ so it’s like comparing apples to oranges a lot of the time.
edit...beaten to the apples and oranges
Anyone who watched their indifference to the thousands of deaths under their austerity programme isn't surprised that they would be indifferent to a plague sweeping away the dependent vulnerable.
But then they had an "Oh Shit!" moment when they realised it also affected special people like themselves, and that's when they sprung into action.
The media is reminiscent of our "glorious victories" at the Loos and the Somme. Same class of leadership too...
What I don’t understand is how the press allow the politicians away so lightly at the daily press conference. Why do they allow sound bites about how well we’ve done, with no one asking in relation to what. Or when the question about PPE comes up, the press allow an answer along the lines of “we’ve ordered millions more and we are told there is enough stock”; why aren’t they then asking if the doctors and nurses are then lying?
Are all the country’s recording the same metrics? For example we are now including care home deaths in our figures, are other countries doing the same? As has been said on other threads, how can other European countries be doing significantly better than the UK? By massive margins, total death rate being less than our daily rate.
Epicyclo +1
Do we really need another thread that’s halfway between the David Icke thread and the Coronavirus thread?
UK is ahead of France and not far behind Italy.
sorry, meant uk was behind Spain and Italy, but not france
The media is reminiscent of our “glorious victories” at the Loos and the Somme.
This is my worry.... Is the media complicit in ironing over the government's failing?
The US is also an enormous country with a very low population density, with few people who travel round the world.
A friend living just outside of Adelaide was boasting the other day that they've had zero new cases... I tried explaining that it might be due to the fact it's mostly empty and it's population is slightly smaller than that of my home county of Essex, which fits into South Australia 267 times over....
Similar to the Welsh gov saying that it must be an English problem. Fortunately for the Welsh sheep don't seem to be carriers.
Clearly measuring UK rates against other countries with similar population densities makes sense, but that just so happens to be its nearest neighbours.
The US is weeks behind us. We will not know the real comparisions for a while yet but its clear the UK has not handled this at all well
Countries with low infection rates locked down earlier in the cycle thus had many less sources of infections and many less opportunities for transmission
London is the center of the world, with millions of people endlessly coming in and out of it, covering huge distances the whole time.
How parochial. the days of empire are long gone. London is just another european city
Do we really need another thread that’s halfway between the David Icke thread and the Coronavirus thread?
I haven't seen anything specific to UK government in the other threads.
I'll start a thread about designer sunglasses or up market UK holiday destinations away from the hoi polloi for you tomorrow.... 😉 😘
London is just
anotherprobably the biggest and most connected european city
