When I want a critique of Da Vinci, I’ll go to someone who knows something about the subject...
Quite. She has for some time been in the same camp as Clarkson, Katie Hopkins, Richard Littlejohn and all the other dog-whistle polemicists. Which is funny/ironic/sad.
I didn't care about what Germaine Greer thought about art until you posted that link. I've read it now, and disagree with her, but still don't care what she thinks. It's one of those questions, in my opinion where someone with an audience on a certain subject suddenly thinks that makes their views on everything interesting or important; Clarkson, Katie Hopkins, Richard Littlejohn are indeed pretty good examples of this.
I don't really like his art either.
but I don't read the guardian

Yeah but you've clicked on a link to an article in Guardian, and that's what it's about. If Germaine Greer had said that Leonardo da Vinci was a genius you wouldn't have read her article in the Guardian. Job done.
By the way his flying machines were crap too. None of them managed to take off.
You can have that one on me for free.

To be fair, she does get paid (possibly quite a lot?) to share her opinions, so I suppose they are important in at least one way.
Wether they are interesting or not can be judged on how long she continues to get paid to share them, which is quite a while so far I would say. 👍
Yeah but you’ve clicked on a link to an article in Guardian, and that’s what it’s about.
Interesting point. I would posit, though, that having read her thoughts on this once, has actually made me much less likely to click on any such link again, so I'm not sure it's such a great thing in the long term. For her, and her (quite possibly large) pay packet. Having responded to this point twice now doesn't really reflect, I think, how much I actually GAS so I'll stop 🙂

Not read the article but - the Mona Lisa isn't a great painting so theres nothing contentious about saying so, its a celebrity painting (not a painting of or by a celeb - the painting itself is a celebrity). The way it became a celebrity is pretty fascinating - but if you look past that its pretty average.
The painting was pretty much overlooked for centuries - it just happened to be stolen at the point newspapers started including pictures (all be it engravings rather than photos) so its fame comes from being the first painting you could recognise and know the name of without having actually seen it in person. It became famous for that, not for being particularly good.
He was a genius, great ideas man, but only an OK painter if he ever got round to finishing them.
I'll try and find the clip, but there's a excerpt from HIGNFY where guest host Kirsty Young gives a wicked GG impersonation, commenting how GG reported that 'she couldn't understand a word Kirsty Young was saying" - in a thick Aussie accent, and how she (KY) "thought that was bit rich".. 🙂
Simple answer: No
She seems to do a pretty good impression of a gammon these days getting angry on demand and saying things just to get a rise/media attention (which she seems inordinately good at).
It must be hard to think ‘once upon a time I had something relevant to say’ (I can’t pretend ever to have had that problem).
I can't even remember what she said about anything when she was supposedly relevant....
Nah, I wouldn't read her Guardian column myself, but I did watch this a little while back:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b6q27f
Fascinating, it was. She has had quite an amazing life.
Maybe some of the enlightened on here should give it a watch.
Like everyone else she's entitled to an opinion. She's mostly right about DaVinci
I suppose her opinions are about as relevant as anyone else's in this thread.
She's willing to stick her neck out over the transphobia madness, and has been no-platformed by the social justice warriors who run Britain's Loonyversities, so a lone voice of sanity in a world filled with barking mad lefties.
Haha, grimep , I think you missed cuck and lib tard.
Parody much?
Not terms I'd use- they remind me of the overuse of "alt-right" by socialists trying to discredit anyone who doesn't subscribe to their worldview. Loonyversities is just about right though. From "de-colonising" the curriculum to no platforming people who suggest there are 2 sexes, they've become identity politics' crackpot central.
Uh-uh same as social justice warrior is to the right I guess.
Everyone has the right to free speech, whether they hail from the right or left sometimes people seem to forget that.
I would posit, though, that having read her thoughts on this once, has actually made me much less likely to click on any such link again, so I’m not sure it’s such a great thing in the long term.
they don't care about the long term.
it is pretty average, she hasn't even got any eyebrows !??
Wasn't it a speech at the Hay Book Festival, which was then reported in the Guardian?
So it's all about getting a reaction, so you get more paid for bookings.
the Mona Lisa isn’t a great painting so theres nothing contentious about saying so
Brilliant. By the same logic Brexit would lead to this country soaring to the top of the rich nations list, so there's no contention in saying so.
An Australian comments on the artwork of a long dead Italian and someone has to mention ****ing brexit!
Greer pioneered the shocking contrarian self-marketing statement in the 70s, but now everyone is doing it, she can't get a word in. A very insecure lady deep-down who just wants some more attention, but a very decent Shakespeare scholar.
