Stw usually has an answer for most things so I thought I'd ask here.
I have a collection of maybe 500-600 records, mostly hip hop and jazz/funk.
I never play much of my collection so am thinking to get rid in the new year.
Do I:-
Use somewhere like discogs.
Use somewhere like ebay.
Use a record buyer.
Anyone have any experiences?
I would expect that the first two could mean no sales but I expect that option 3 would pay a fair bit under sales price. Correct?
Cheers
Has anyone sold a large amount of records?
Norris McWhirter?
He only sold the books containing the records 😉
Does Record Collector magazine still exist? If so I'd be going through my collection and picking out any rarities for sale to specialists. The rest I'd just try and move as a job lot.
Yes sold all my vinyl years ago 🙁
I contacted my local record/cd market organiser, and rented a stall for the day and sold it direct. Got top prices.
Russianbob. That was main train of thought. Discogs is quite good to gauge the market.
There will be three tiers.
Stuff I keep.
Stuff worth money.
Stuff not worth anything...
Instant hit, ah! I like it!!
sold all mine to a local collector years ago, couldnt be doing with the faff of ebay or selling separate.
got a price we were both happy with.
Same as sadexpunk, sold everything as a job lot to my local collectors shop. Still have pangs of regret now and again...

same, had some real rare records, lots of coloured vinyl etc. think its that hoarding instinct of just wanting to keep stuff even tho you know it doesnt make sense. im a bit the same with my cds now cos i know ill only listen to music stored on a hard drive or deezer streamed to phone/chromecast etc.
although i dont love my cds as much as i did my vinyl so itll be no heartbreak getting rid of those 🙂
Didn't records outsell digital downloads this last month?
I did it 3 years ago to fund the construction of a man-cave.
I did it the hard way and listed them all on eBay.
It was a bit of a hassle packaging everything up and running to the post office but I got in over £3k over a 4-5 month period.
I've still got a box of picture discs etc which I can't bring myself to part with just yet.
@rockhopper yes, value wise they did. But when you consider a record might cost anywhere upto £100 (for a big old boxset) and a download just 99p it's quite easy for that to happen. In terms of numbers downloads still sold more than vinyl, just that they are cheaper so made less.
I'll keep the records I have an emotional attachment to and those that I really like.
I've listed a load of stuff on discogs and it's an eye opener. I have some stuff, like bdp's sex and violence which is 'worth' far more than I'd ever pay cuz i never really liked it.
Far more difficult to sell would be something like the Beastie Boys Polly Wog Stew Ep, which seems to be worth a bob or two. But, I've not played that particular record for years.
Before you sell as a job lot, do have a butcher's on Discogs for prices of anything you think might be rare or sought-after.
I flogged the vinyl I didn't want to keep on there and it gave me a nice little extra revenue stream for a while, with a few Brucey bonus moments.
Edit: Be honest about condition when selling
