I've got the opportunity to work in Naples for a couple of years and take my family along to live with me. I've heard vastly differing opinions on the city and wondered if anyone has any experience, especially with regard to English speaking schools (long shot I know).
Cheers
I haven't lived there but have been a couple of times on holiday. The centrie is as mental a place as I know and with narrow streets and high buildings very dark and quite threatening. It's not to everyone's taste, i can see that, but I love it's raw edgy feel. Some people have said they've been victims of crime, I haven't and don't know anyone who has but it has the vibe of a crime ridden city especially around the railway station. Still, living there you aren't likely to be in the centre and I can't say anything about the surrounding areas.
English is a bit of an issue though and isn't widely spoken. I've got a bit of Italian and can generally make myself understood with a bit of pointing and miming but where that's fine on holiday, probably isn't what you want to do every day so you will have to learn. That said, I found Italians south of Rome to be great communicators and if you make the effort, they will too so learning shouldn't be too painful.
I'm jealous.
I went twice a month on business for a few years, last time five years ago.
Its like all cities, some parts are total no-go's (especially after dark) and others are really nice - but overall its not a place I'd want to live...
IME Italy is really two nations, south and north. The north is pretty much a typical European country, while the south is more 'mediterainian', ie North Africa, Balkens, Turkey. So if you can live with that...
Living costs will be low, but only in the areas you wouldn't want to live - so make sure you've a good deal. And the traffic is dire, so make sure you live near (mileage) to work.
Did I say I wouldn't want to live there?
ps And never a problem with English
Some of the best food I've ever eaten and the home of Pizza, friendly Napolitans too. Surely that outweighs any Camorra issues you might run into? 8)
