And if so, how did it go?

We are considering moving towards EU citizenship through a ‘Golden Visa’ program and I was wondering if anyone had any advice or recommendations...

Fwiw, Portugal is the current front runner.

Thanks!

Never heard of this before so looked it up.
Seems like an investment of €500,000 is required.
After jumping through hoops and getting this does it allow visa free travel within the EU?

Ahh, so that's how brexit is totally fine as long as you are loaded.

Portugal and Italy are of the order of 270 000e IIRC. With Italy if you live there 10 years you get nationality not just residency. I think the main consideration should be where you'd like to spend your life. Of the countries offering golden passports my choices would be Italy or Portugal.

That's always been the plan, just the hard-of-thinking and the useful-idiots hadn't realised.

It’s a funny one thou doesn’t buy you an eu passport, you’ll get residency which allows you to trundle around Europe without any of the 90 days in 180 kerfuffle and if everything’s shut down you can still get in.

Its 500,000 in Spain but tbh you could probably do one of the non-lucrative visas if you have 30k(ish) euro per person and health insurance.

Yep pre Brexit was easier 9(kish) and tbh depending on the region could be less or more and health insurance.

After one year you can join and pay into the Spanish health service instead of private.

I also have a feeling it’s a bit vague now on driving licences as the U.K. licence isn’t recognised in Spain for a swap not sure of the other countries so you may have to factor in a driving test unless this changes.

Golden visa aside, does this mean I can’t even drive as a tourist in Spain anymore?

Nah your fine for hols, it’s just residents need to have a Spanish one and as Spain now doesn’t have access to the U.K. db they can’t do the simple swap they used to.

Malta is the quickest short cut, but yes, when rights become privileges, they are then only available to the privileged. Why would it be any other way?

"….*off*" no ! As another dual national I'm quite happy for UK nationals to spend their money in Europe and think it a pity my government isn't making more efforts to adapt legislation to make it easier and more lucrative in terms of tax take. Taxe d'habitation +50% or 100% (already the case on some second homes even for French nationals). A surcharge on the Taxe foncière, the obligation to make a French impôt sur le revenue declaration under the same conditions as French nationals, an obligatory health insurance via the CPAM. There's money to be made.

I've realised I'll need an international driving license to drive in the UK now. I've got the old pink paper French one which as far as I can work out is no longer valid in the UK.

I thought the Government had announced as a late Brexit Bonus that they’d secured mutual recognition of driving licenses? Certainly the government website suggests UK licenses are OK in the EU.

From your link...

Driving if you move abroad
You need to get a local driving licence if you move abroad. Check with the driving licence authorities there to find out how to apply.

In some countries you can exchange your UK licence without taking another driving test.

If you move to an EU country, check the rules for exchanging your licence in the EU.

Spain (including Balearic and Canary Isles)
You can continue to use your licence until 1 July 2021. You may need to take a test if you want to exchange your licence. If you hold a licence from Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, you may need to take a test to drive in Spain.

Ah - right. So it’s only mutual recognition if you’re resident in the country whose licence you hold.

Cheers all. From my currently limited understanding, residency allows free access to travel around the EU, with the need to spend only 7 days per year in Portugal. After 5 years you would become eligible for citizenship and thereby the right to live and work throughout the EU. Citizenship which could then be passed on to your children.

The right to live in the EU, and the right for my child to live and work there, these are the things I want. Things we all had. Damn Brexit. Guess I’ll fill in some forms and see how it looks...

There is always the Ireland route. Relocate, and them stay for long enough to apply for citizenship.

Yep now available with a larger price tag.

Working eu side mmm that’s the other giggle of the recognition of qualifications.

(Crafty edit as I’m not happy with the link I posted as being 100% accurate with their facts)
