B jnr wanted to visit subject place, so as her birthday in August, we have booked tickets.

We will be flying into Luton (yeah!) from NE Scotland and will hire a car.

Many moons ago, I stayed in The Grove near Rickmansworth with work, but it's a tad expensive for my own pocket...so any recommendations for half decent places to stay not too far from HPW?

Thanks!

We drove down from Ayrshire, had a night in S upon Avon, then drove down from there. Stayed at a premier inn, st Albans. It was actually alright, and ideal for food and a wee walk through the park etc at night, then a couple of nights in Harrogate on the way home, was good.

I loved Harry potter world btw, wasn't expecting to, it was bloody awesome, especially the artwork and hogwarts model.

Was out of term holidays as well, wee yin was the only kid there!.

Enjoy.

There's a bit of a shortage of decent hotels in and around Watford. The Grove is the default for corporates where someone else is paying the bill, as you have identified.

What's your budget?

There are several Premier Inn's around that are as you'd expect: Bourne End or Tring if you fancy a bit of a view. Avoid the one in KL.

There's a Holiday Inn Express in Apsley which is ok.

Then, away from the chains there is the Pennyfarthing in Berkhamsted.

Downtown Watford hotels are less good and less easy to recommend, but the Jury's Inn may be bearable if you can get a deal.

There are a couple of Travel Lodges too if the above are too dear.

There's a premier inn or travel lodge at Junction 9 of the M1 too.

The Bourne End one is probably a little out the way from Luton to Watford.

I'm in Berkhamsted myself, so only about 10 mins away. Can put you a camp bed in the garage if you like haha.

We stayed in Hemel Hempstead when we went to HPW.
There are some lovely open areas and parks for the kids in the area too.

I'd stay in the Premier Inn at St Albans if I wanted to keep it in a sensible budget. It's new (opened two years ago maybe), very central, lots of nice places to eat nearby - I like the Beech House - and the beautiful St Albans abbey and Verulamium Park (with some interesting Roman bits and bobs) is 10 minutes walk away too.

The bonus of staying in Hemel is that you get to terrify the kids as you attempt to navigate the magic roundabout....

scary

We're off there next month and staying at Mercure St Albans Noke Hotel not far from HP world.

There are a few Premier Inns nearby too. You've got a few 'eateries' off the A405 too.

We are hoping to go to Whipsnade on the Sunday, after HP on Saturday.

I still can not believe how popular Harry Potter World is. We went on a Sunday around 3pm and it was full up for our entry time. We came out around 5 and saw that it was full for that entry too. Overheard people talking about it being their 6th visit there.
Its interesting, but i wouldnt feel the need to go back

The Grove near Rickmansworth

No it's not! 😉

They don't like to admit it's in Watford, but it is.

Watford is a bit crap overall, hence the lack of decent hotels locally.

Born and raised, escaped aged 21 (ish), then a 6 month stint post uni before heading to the Cambridge hills. Still visit the in laws in South Oxhey sometimes, always a pleasure!
