The great gig in the sky , anything more difficult ? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_1jL8A20H_k
Before I even opened the thread I was already going to suggest the same song.
You have to get the "wailing" (??) just right....
Gimme shelter?
That was the other one that came to mind but I think that when somebody sings that they are always compared to Merry Clayton or Lisa Fischer whereas the Gig in the Sky must just be really hard to do .
Possibly Bohemian Rhapsody, but that's not actually backing singers is it? It's Freddie overdubbing himself. So how about Paperback Writer?
Dunno, I wouldn't have thought any of those would be difficult for a decent singer.
Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein so I'll take that as a hint to suggest America for West Side Story. The harmony parts in that are weird.
I think Everyday People by Sly Stone cos youd have to sing ‘and so on and so on and scooby dooby doo’ without laughing or breaking into a cartoon dog impersonation.
Stockhausen: Stimmung

Likewise. That said, I'm not sure it counts as backing vocals - it's pretty much the focal point of the track, which probably makes it the lead vocal?
Just listening to the link shows how tough it is though. Obviously a very capable vocalist, but it just doesnt sound 'right'. IIRC the original was improvised and done in one take, so it might not even have sounded the same with the original vocalist doing a second take, never mind live!
I wondered if somebody might make that point . I could have put hardest song for people who aren't members of the group that are associated with that song but it would have been a bit of a mouthful .
Maybe not tecknically hard but keeping going without missing a beat when everything is cracking up about you:
Elvis / are you lonesome tonight.
