can I drag all the phones content into a folder on my mac, do a full reset on the phone, then drag it all back? or will I lose data?
I suspect that will back up the SD card but not the internal storage. So yes, you'll lose data. And break most of your apps.
I'd suggest Titanium Backup from the Market.
don't forget that Titanium Backup will only work if the phone is rooted

PhilConsequence and I have had to reset our HTC Hero and HTC Tattoo, his one didn't lose any data like contacts photos, etc. I took my sd card out and didn't lose anything either. Reset them to original settings and lost apps, but the app store remembers what you've downloaded so quick to rectify..
