Laptop HDD has stopped working over the weekend (it's not detected by BIOS and when plugged into an external caddy doesn't even appear to be spinning up so suspect the PCB is knackered)
Any recommendations / first hand experience of data recovery firms?

Not cheap but we use them at work and don't think we have had a case where they couldn't recover the data.

OnTrack is the defacto answer here. Don't expect much change out of a grand. Backups are considerably easier and cheaper than data recovery.
