Why is living longer thought of as such a great thing?

The really bad news is that, if you're a pessimist it'll just feel  longer but  you'll die sooner anyway.

If you enjoy being alive and are still able to do what you enjoy doing why wouldn't you want it to go on for longer. Once I am confined to a chair and unable to look after myself I would go for the end life button so living longer is great as long as you want to. Typically the last year or two are not worth bothering with (see how optimistic I am)

That's the spirit!

I've never prescribed corrective lenses for anyone, so it's a hands down from me.

How do they gather this data? Do they interview folk who are about to shuffle off this mortal coil. Do they take all deaths in to account? Sounds like a load of shite to me. Might actually open the link though 😀

Surely that would self select for pessimists?

When asked " Are you about to die?" your average optimist will  obviously respond with "No, I'm fine"

stewartc is onto something. The people I know most obsessed with living for a very long time tend to be the ones also obsessed with weird diets, punishing fitness regimes, and generally abstaining from pretty much everything fun or 'naughty'. They're often miserable as f+ck as far as I can tell. Give me quality not quantity of life, any day (within reason).

A pessimist is just an optimist with all the facts.

I think I fall into the optimist category generally, so long as things keep going OKish we're generally a happy (annoying to others) bunch... Boris might be squaring up to bollox that though at the minute.

Why is living longer thought of as such a great thing?

Dunno, I've been alive all of my life so far and overall found that I enjoy it. While I'm aware of the one alternative on offer, normally you only get to try it out just the once, and there's apparently a no-returns policy, so if you don't enjoy death more than life I don't think you can opt back out of it*. So I'll hold off for now...

*certain religions may offer (unsubstantiated) alternatives to the basic offering including but not limited to various forms of "Afterlife(s)", "Purgatory" and/or "Reincarnation" in exchange for varying proportions of your personal wealth, time and sanity...

The company of optimists is far more fun than those of pessimists. The problem with pessimists is they want to convert everyone else into pessimists, determined to tell everyone they meet why everything is so crap (despite the facts), that the world is against them and to convince them of every conceivable way things can turn to crap. Much more pleasant in the company of people who are looking for ways to enhance their lives.

There’s a line though. Really cheerful people get annoying very quickly. The company of those in the middle (realists?) is much more enjoyable.

Positive, cheerful optimist here 😁

I see opportunity, open doors and new things everywhere - and I'm a massive believer that you get out what you put in. It's possible to energise others around you and get even a grumpy pessimist to cheer up with a bit of effort.

Having worked in multiple countries and markets, the grumpy pessimist does seem quite a British thing - and it's a hugely limiting mindset.

This place has a higher proportion of 'the world is ending, everything is so bad' pessimists than any forum I've been a member of.

I have a work colleague who would give you a good run for his money. Just one example, he has an arthritic hip and we have full private health care, so he could have new hip fitted next week for free. However, he would have less to moan about, so won't do anything and seems to prefer limping in pain everywhere as that way he can tell everyone how bad his hip is....

I'm a carefree pessimist. I assume it's all going to go to shit, but don't really care.
