Message:

To the Ass Hat Enduro Stormtrooper who snearingly reminded me that "your helmet's undone mate" whilst I was taking my daughter on a wee gentle ride on the Blue at Haldon.

I will wear my helmet any way I want to. (chinstrap done up or not) I might not be wearing the latest threads or look like a "proper" biker on my 26" Rock Lobster but kindly stick your unwanted comments up your arse.

Ohh and BTW... I had throat cancer last year. Just got through it by the skin of my teeth. So actually at the moment, I cant wear a chin strap until I fully recover.

Keep your comments to yourself. No-one appointed you the MTB Police.

I hope you told him directly instead of letting it fester until you had the chance to unload on here. A nice foul mouthed tirade in front of your daughter would have really give him what for.

Flipping considerate people; how bloody dare he.

From the other side
' Oh look , that guys forgotten to do up his chin strap, I will remind him it could save him from a severe head injury if he suffers one of those silly falls whilst watching his kid ride really slowly'
Or .- Marshalling at the southern Enduro yesturday I also told a lad to do up his chinstrap, prctise or not there were some fast sections, drops, roots , trees , death chalk etc . In reality more people crashed in practise than in the race itself. ergo.- chinstrap done up for practise is still important.

"if it's not done up, you're not wearing it properly" is the rule. if you can't do up your chin strap, what's the point in putting it on?

But seriously Semtex, just a bad day? Sometimes I want to tell people to off over something not that heavy. Later I realise they were not meaning me any harm, disrespect etc.

Haldon – Ass Hat

if that’s how you were wearing it, I’m not surprised that you didn’t fasten the chin strap.

No one likes a wedgie.

Now there’s a blast from the past!

OP, did your daughter have a fun day out? Surely that’s the thing to take away from the day, rather than someone’s comment?

I see this place is still very much a ass hat nexus. OP should stay indoors if he reacts like that to every mundane, reasonable comment he encounters. Grow up.

I wasn’t there so I have no idea of the context or tone in which the comment was given. Therefore I will refrain from passing judgement. I’m just always in awe of the omniscient nature of posters on here. Keep being awesome.

You okay OP, something else going on?

This reminds me of the conversation I had a with another cyclist about why the white light should go on the front of her bike.

I thought I was being helpful. She thought I was a mansplaining d**k

Obviously i wasn’t there so the guy could have said it in the most sarcy tone ever...

But...

I think the correct response is “U OK hun?”

Surely his efforts were akin to telling a parent their kid’s bike forks are on backwards. Or their v brake is undone?
I mean... can’t we just assume it was meant in good favour?

1. Wear the strap loose to avoid these comments.

2. Doesn't the cranium strap do more to hold your helmet on anyway?

A good one should stay in place without the strap in a static way, chin strap off what happens in an impact all bets are off.

So yeah the person saying it probably thought you had forgotten and was doing the OP a favour.

cranium strap does nothing to hold the helmet on in a crash and a loose chin strap means the helmet won't really work properly

I still don't get people who do this!

Do they think at the time "shall I say something now while I've got the chance or go on the internet later where there's a 0.01% chance the person will see it and make myself look like a bit of a bellend in the process🤔

Cheers Guys.

Interesting comments!

So you ready for the FULL story then?

Anyway, I was up at Haldon the other day (on my own.) Doing the Red/Black and a bit of off-piste.

I came around a corner and spotted a father and his daughter riding together. She looked a bit wobbly and he hadn't even buckled his helmet up.

I shouted a cheery "Hello" and gently reminded him that his helmet was not buckled up properly. (Bad example to set for a child and all that.) It really was a "Cheery" hello. Kid even smiled and everything.

Anyway, he gave me a pile of abuse. Told me to go and get stuffed. Told me that I should mind my own business and that he didnt want to buckle his helmet up. (Said something about Cancer and being "like" an "adult" and being able to make decisions for himself.

I just dont get it. I was just trying to help. Really ruined my day. I know he was only on the Blue Route but accidents can happen. I'm not exactly the MTB Police. I don't go around sticking my nose into everyones business but I couldnt have lived with myself if something had happened to him and I hadnt said anything.

Really properly pissed me off. Glad I'm not barking up the wrong tree. Sounds like we would all step in and offer advice where needed. Thanks for the support. Helmets save lives!

Ooooo, I like how this has gone.

It's a tricky thing that shouldn't be tricky. Like telling people their forks are on backwards- people seem reluctant to do it. I was at Comrie Croft last weekend and having fun mucking about in the little bike park at the bottom there at the end of the ride. There was a lady there on a Whyte hardtail watching her kids riding, and her forks were on backwards. I went over and extremely politely mentioned her forks were on backwards and she said that the bike had felt strange. I offered to sort it and she was delighted.

That's as easy as it needs to be- offer help, and it should either be politely accepted or politely declined. It doesn't have to turn into a thing. Keep offering help OP, it'll really make someone's day one time.

think I read the other day that you can't report your own post - pity could go full circle - OP really insult himself and then report post and get it deleted

wanders off and remembers you don't have to read it

Try the TRL for one. they actually are against cranium straps as they reduce helmet effectiveness by allowing people to think and ill fitting helmet is OK because the cranium strap tightens to the head.

Or try looking at what the manufacturers say.

What's TRL?

Tried Bell, Giro, Met...no obvious articles that are relevant.

@Tjagain
The TRL research shows that in an ideal world the helmet should fit closely to the head.
We live in the real world, it would be impractical to have a huge range of shell sizes both for manufacturers and bike shops.
There is also the case that I don’t want to have a separate helmet for summer and winter riding where I like to wear a hat to keep my head warm.

Apparently the solution to this is to buy a small helmet and dremel out the insides until it fits. Saves a bit of weight too.

bikepawl - irrelevant to the point. cynic al was claiming the head band holds the helmet on. the TRL research explains clearly why this is not so. ~A differnt issue.

Right.... This is getting ridiculous.

I've just been up to Haldon for my normal Wednesday night blast around the Red/Blue.

Just before I left the carpark I noticed some guy (clearly a newbie) who was just about to set out on a ride.

A blind man on a galloping horse could have seen that his tyres were WAY too hard.

I chucked a pressure guage on them and they were 25psi!!!!!! I mean.... what was he thinking! It was SOOOOOO obvious that 24.5psi would have been plenty for his wheel/tyre combo.

I tried my best to offer advice but the grumpy old bugger didnt want to hear any of it.

I was beside myself. What was he thinking? Does he not know the "rules?" I've been worried about him all night. Hope he got back safe and in one piece.

Mind you..... I probably should look deep into my own soul for an answer..... maybe "i should have stayed indoors if I was going to react like that!"

cynic al was claiming the head band holds the helmet on

I did initially ask if that was the case, I did not claim it.

I did a few searches on TRL and couldn't find an article saying what you claim they say.

No offence but I'll take evidence over your opinion, and would welcome a link to a relevant article in support.

Bravo OP, great twist there and well done on approaching the guy. Shame he was a bellend about it.

I still suffer memory loss, confusion, tiredness and temper problems from a silly household head injury last summer and will probably have repercussions for the rest of my life.
