Alt-Right : Age of Rage
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p06y74zp/altright-age-of-rage
Some reviews saying it is biased towards Antifa, but either way you can't but notice that Daryle Lamont Jenkins and his associates comes over as pretty normal guys whereas calling most of the guys on the right 'Neanderthals' would be an insult to 'Neanderthals'.
It's a shame that the left side show as much rage as they do, although understandable when you see what they are up against.
Just posting in case anyone hasn't noticed it.
Well 5 mins in we have a rich little white racist who seems to be struggling with the fact that being white doesn't make you better these days.
Do they all just come across as pretty normal racists?
To call bias would need people to work out what the norm is.
Good to see some of these evil nazi apologists being called out
BAZELON: Well, Bannon and Sessions share an ideology that - they often talk about it as being anti-immigrant. And it is. But I think that it's broader than that. I think they really see the chief internal threat of the country as being the way the country's demographics are changing. We're going to go from being a country with about 30 percent of minority voters to about 40 percent in a few presidential cycles. And that - unless the Republican Party changes its platform, that will be a challenge to Republicans and to Trump's base of support, which is 90 percent white.
But I also think there's a kind of deeper cultural discomfort with the growing population of people who are not white in this country, coming from a kind of traditional white sense of propriety of what America is about. That is what's motivating Sessions and Bannon, and that it's part of what's driving the more extreme elements of this presidency.
GROSS: So the goal is to keep America more white and Christian?
BAZELON: Well, yes. I think, bluntly speaking, that's the case. So Sessions, for example, on Bannon's radio show a couple of years ago was talking about an earlier period in American history of high immigration in the beginning of the 20th century. And he talked about that as a radical time. And he used that in a kind of pejorative sense. And then he said that the solution was the 1924 immigration quotas Congress passed and that those quotas were, quote, "good for America."
And a good read as to the aims and motivations of the architects of Trumps trip to the white house
Well the racists remind me of out very own JRM using fine words and good old fashioned grammar to spout hate. Very well rehearsed speeches from them, just need some shit coloured shirts.
Cheers for the heads up, it looks like it'll be an interesting, if difficult watch.
I had a run in with the Proud Boys after Funk D'void (Lars Sandberg) designed and sold t-shirts with their logo and was dropped from gigs and barred from venues, he's such a snowflake. I've also had threats from Scottish Dawn too, who are recognised as a terrorist organisation and have members living a bit too close for comfort
Don't know where all this is going to end TBH, but it's not going to be pretty. I think the media was far too quick to adopt the term Alt-Right allowing a lot of these groups to fly under the radar for so long before the mainstream audience caught up and started to understand the full gravity of what was going on. I'll bet so many people even today hears or reads the term Alt-Right and thinks of a bunch of fairly harmless student type activisits playing politics. The term seems to have been invented and then self applied for that reason - to take the sting out of what was previously called far right, neo nazis, racists, white supremacists etc. Can't help but think if the media had kept to those terms the Alt-Right groups wouldn't have grown to what they have become today.
Some on the left need to have a long hard look at themselves also. They are driving people away from the left due to a "think exactly like us or you are one of them" attitude and the identity politics mentality amoungst the more vocal groups. When people are driven away there doesn't seem anywhere else to turn but to the right and these Alt-Right type groups are hoovering them up.
We need a huge injection of common sense and to make a start on de-escalation rather than the constant tit-for-tat which only fuels the tribal nature of what is going on. Where that is going to come from is a mystery at the moment, there is a huge gap there in terms of world leadership.

But we also need to robustly defend the facts, expose the people who are using bad science and more to push hatred and division.
In many ways it's nice to let the racists speak freely, they expose themselves and their views but the problem really is how they draw people in.
and as I get to the part about statues this came to mind

American troops and Americans across the board cheering at the pulling down of statues that represent something that was bad and dangerous

Absolutely, and in general terms of speaking freely this is something that has been a problem for the past few years. People need to be able to ask questions, explore ideas, form their own opinions and then be free to change those opinions when presented with evidence and facts that counter them without being shut down or shot down at every opportuntity just because they expressed something different. People are able to change and grow, however, if every thing they have said or done can and will be brought up years or decades even after they have moved on from that viewpoint and used to destroy them, there is little incentive left to change. These people will be pushed away and again be an easy recruit for the other side.
The lot of them are dangerous tbh. The Antifa loonballs seem incapable of understanding that they are being used.
At this point I'd settle for sending the fascists to somewhere they are a minority.
As for exploring views and ideas these guys are not doing that, it's pure vile hatred. Some of those digging through Corbyns clip file should probably turn their attention to the rampant racism and against anyone going on there.
@mikewsmith, you're absolutely right but how do you do that when eugenics is being taught in classrooms and defended by education boards and governments?

I wasn't refering to those guys. I was refering to ordinary people.

In the US you need to sort out the shit they have with their amendments. This is where things need to change, even if it's a prefix of this is our fantasy belief.
With one of the antifata group summing it up, Trump will bring people out - to oppose him and those on the alt right. The current election results there showed that.
An image that popped up was a Nazi one publicising the "burden" on society of disabled people

This is something in the UK we are subscribing to, are we comfortable with that?
In the UK you need a judicial review, it costs a minimum of £60k and legal aid doesn't cover human rights or public law cases. Discrimination is entwined with practices and policies which are designed to ensure white male power. It's a notion we all subscribe to, whether we know and like it or not. I'm happy to discuss and hear people's views and it's understandable that some feel hard done by and blame others. I'd never say that white males aren't hard done by, I know plenty who face real hardships... But it's not because they are white
watched this the other day.
i agree with the guy at the start saying not all those on the right are truly alt-right.
but to see people at the conferences saluting is worrying.
obviously those on the far left, the anti-fa and such are extremists, but i'm thankful that they are willing to put themselves in the line of fire (sometimes literally).
i watched it thinking "hey, septics...", but i live in Munich, Germany, and it's really not that far removed from what happened here a generation ago.
