Hello,

I am going to be cycling the Route 72 Hadrian’s Cycleway coast to coast route at the end of the year. This is something I had planned to do for a while, but having learned of the situation of a young man called Nathan, I felt that it may also be an opportunity to raise both awareness and hopefully some funds to support his treatment.

‘Nathan is nine years old and has been attending Great Ormond Street hospital for the majority of his life so much so that in the last few years he has practically lived at the hospital as treatment has been constant. Nathan currently has five brain tumours, as well as his spine is covered in tumours. The tumours are classified as Low Grade Glioma, which have been treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy over the past five years.

Four of the tumours are inactive, however the fifth tumour is new, is actively growing and is wrapped around his optic nerve which could cause Nathan to lose his sight if it was to be operated on. He currently needs to have a chemotherapy medication called Avastin, which is available from the United States, and has a good success rate, as it targets only the tumour.’

There have been a number of fundraising events to date to support Nathan’s treatment programme, and more information is available at the family’s just giving page: http://www.justgiving.com/Nathan-Francis1

I have decided to see if I can lend my support by cycling the Route 72 Hadrian’s Cycleway coast to coast route which is 174 miles, starting in Ravenglass and finishing in South Shields.

There are more details about the route on the links below, but essentially the plan is to complete the 174 miles in two sections of around 87 miles within a period of 24 hours starting on Monday 31st December and finishing on Tuesday 1st January.

If you would like to support Nathan’s treatment you can either send me an email or visit the families just giving page at: http://www.justgiving.com/Nathan-Francis1

Please feel free to distribute this to any one who may be interested.

Many Thanks,
Ben Palmer
