Just watched this lady park her large SUV in the nearest parking space next to the gym and then go on the walking on the running machine.
I cycled 20 mike's just to use the weights.

2 of our customers told us that they have enlisted at the local health centre. We saw them driving into it in their car.
0.3 miles away from their house.

To be fair, she's doing a lot better than most SUV owners who just drive between the TV and the take away....

It is quite odd how we've managed to create a car dependant culture in the UK - it's not like the US where most states don't have any pavements etc.

The tallest Mike i know is about 6'2. So you cycled 123 feet and a few inches? 😉

A more serious response to this would be to ask if it is simply the case that the woman in question doesn't feel safe walking on her own? The Sarah Everard murder, and the recent incel-related shootings in Plymouth are examples of why that may be.

Huge assumptions on my part, clearly.

I was going for the 'going to do the weekly shop after her workout' as slightly more likely (but less exciting)

I can remember listening to a woman on the radio complaining about traffic congestion in Belfast. Apparently its a real problem, took her 30 minutes to drive the half mile to the gym. 🤦‍♂️ No hint of irony.

Or she lives miles away, has commuted in for work and is just stopping by the gym on her way home. That seems to be the MO of most car driving users of my local gym.

In the small local supermarket earlier, I overheard a customer asking another one if there were any other supermarkets around. The guy replied that yes, there was a co-op but "you'll have to drive".

The Co-op is a 4 minute walk down the road.

I appreciate the irony but I don't think we should be shaming gym-goers for driving or walking on the running machine. Unless they are going there to chit chat, simply being at the gym probably means they are doing more than the average person.

I would be the first to encourage sustainable transport where possible but there are a whole number of reasons why they might not want to walk or cycle to the gym.

I used to regularly see people at the Pure Gym at Quarter mile on the running machines on sunny days yet the meadows is only a stones throw away. 🤦
There is a gym wear fashion culture going on so you must have your post workout Instagram photo using the gym's mirrors.

People are weird, some ride in circles in the local woods dressed like power rangers 😉

^ I go to that Quartermile Puregym. I go on the running machines right at the window.
It's to warm up for doing weights.

Maybe folk mix up the running machines with rowing, stair climber, cross trainer, exercise bike, battle bike, an exercise class or any other of a million things. They may not like running in the Meadows because of all the folk getting in their way with their dogs. Or pissed up neds shouting abuse or something. Maybe they like getting a shower after?

They might be lazy, self-obsessed dicks who want to post photos of themselves on IG AND, or OR if we get Boolean on it.

I can see why people drive - absolutely no way I could cycle or walk too far after doing a proper weights session.

Boo! Of course we should. Just go for a run or a walk. Save fuel and gym membership. I love riding bikes but ****ing hate exercise bikes. Just feels wrong when you can’t lean and throw yourself about a bit. Bikes that don’t move are just plain silly. As for running, that’s only for running away or chasing a bike thief.

I can see why people drive – absolutely no way I could cycle or walk too far after doing a proper weights session.

So you’re okay using your arms and legs to operate heavy machinery? I used to do a lot of barbell stuff when I was younger, strong lift and the like. Always cycled to and from the gym. Saved time on warming up and down. Couple of miles each way. Had DOM’s sometimes on the day after but never on the same day

Whereas no one else feels safe when she is driving her SUV.

That right there sounds like a reason women don’t walk to the gym.

What you need to do next time is go up to her and mansplain how she was doing it wrong.

Yea, but I don't do mansplaining.
The car park is huge and in a hospital, so I just find it odd to park as close as possible to the gym and go on the running machine. That's all.

Critiquing other people's fairly innocuous behaviour then posting about it online is also pretty weird.

Agree, strange thing to start a post about. But while we are here when I was out walking the dogs I saw a man get in his car and drive literally around the corner (about 200 metres) to the post box and then drive back to his house. He is an able bodied person as I see him mowing his front lawn when I walk past sometimes. Maybe I should have started a post about it...

I must have missed the 20 page thread on how your trainers made a funny noise and didn't transition smoothly between walking and running.

You think it's weird but it's a living for most stand up comedians.

I would post up that picture of people taking the escalator rather than the stairs to get to the gym but am too lazy.

At the Southampton Bike Park we got complaints from dog walkers that rather than just walking straight across the area we used for the bike park, they now had to use the path around it. I asked if their dogs minded the extra 30 metres of exercise or which bit of grass they shat on but apparently that wasn't the point, they clearly did not want to walk that particular extra 30m.

A bike, a river to swim in, a little bit of rock to boulder on, a trx and some kettle bells. I can't imagine having to go into a gym any more. I am very lucky with what I have on my doorstep and appreciate not everyone has the same. Gyms were the ultimate in curious behaviour people watching though!

A trx attached to a tree with a view beats a gym for me come rain or shine.

We go to the same parties? I bet you drive to them and then park as close as possible to the venue.

I think you left off wood to saw and stack for the burner, and fine fine organic coffee beans to crush in a granite pestle for that forearm workout?

This is a large number of people, not just women at my local gym to. Very large car park and queues for the nearest spaces.

The only person who is really laughing, is the gym owner. All the way to the bank.

Yep not just about women, I see some of the huge, large legged power lifter types do the same thing at different times
A mere comedic observance, as I think the journey to the gym is a chance for a warm-up.

Does he walk, run, cycle or drive to the bank though? If the latter, how close does he park? These are the important questions. Those bags of money might weigh a fair bit

Haha, maybe:

They are using on site physio or equipment for rehab.

Going somewhere further afield post workout.

Just like to be fresh for class.

Anyone that walks through the front door is winning Vs the sedentary IMO.

I've obviously hit a nerve on my Pure Gym comments 🤣

I use Pure Gyms sometimes when working away as I can pay for individual sessions. But I wouldn't do that in the height of summer if I was in the middle of Edinburgh. There are loads of places I'd rather cycle or walk to instead of running/cycling/cross training in a brightly lit, air-conditioned room with a view of a wall or a road.

The gym now for some is very much about fashion. What you wear, what gym you use, the food/supplements you take before and after, post exercise selfies. At least it's a healthy fashion trend. Mostly.

The gym now for some is very much about fashion.

I read an article in the times this morning which shows the benefits of mixing cardio with lifting weights especially in middle-age.
I now see a fair splattering of a far more mixed gender and age group in the weights room than previously.

Would it please you to know that I type this whilst brewing a coffee (beans supplied by the local roaster, ground at home) between shifts on cutting down a tree (with a Stihl obvs and a way cool petrol chipper) that'll end up in the stove in a years time? Sadly both powered by sources other than my measly arms - need to visit a gym obvs to get in better shape. 😉

with a Stihl obvs

Should be using a handmade axe. Sustainably sourced wooden handle and axe head made from recycled metal of course. Made by a local artisan blacksmith etc
