It just means he’s not paid very much.

Just means people who do different jobs buy different makes of jackets.

The only surprise here is that BBC staff get Berghaus discount.

Apart from that, it’s full of normal people who have real lives, and buy all sorts of things.

Are you one of those insufferables that stop buying stuff/listening to bands when said kit/band become 'mainstream'? 🤦‍♂️

Seen him wearing Alpkit stuff a few times, all it shows is he recognises decent kit at good prices.

Covid 19 is going to decidedly less hip in a week or two.

I am insufferable but certainly not for that reason. Hah!😉

Is it just me or is Alpkit as flimsy as it looks - can't bring myself to buy anything of there's and the shops only a few minutes from here.

@cyclelife - I've an Alpkit Filo jacket, my wife has the women's equivalent (can't remember the name) plus a couple of the lighter down jackets/pullovers. All are fine. My Filo is eight years old or so and it is still looking good, no torn threads or worn cuffs for example.

Price wise they used to be really good value but I'd wait for a sale these days.

Another happy long-standing Filo owning couple here.

With the exception of the battery cases on early Gamma headtorches, nothing I've had from them has failed or worn out sooner than I'd expect. And I'm going back to the days when they were based in Ilkeston and could drop stuff off on their way home after work

I guess it depends on what you're benchmarking it against. Most modern technical outdoor kit is lighter than it used to be, even though fabrics are correspondingly tougher for their weight then they were. But I wouldn't have said Alpkit stuff is flimsier than other outdoor brands' comparable products. If anything, it's relatively sturdy.

I've the filo jacket too, cost at the time £95. I think theres been a bit of a rise over the years.

Anyone experience of their lower limit sleeping bags. I've been keeping meaning to find something suitable for Scottish winters. That heady season that have zero flying biting insects.

Really Alpkit down jackets but had two zips fail with the bit that plugs in at the base of the zip coming off. They have had a lot of use and I’ve got one repaired.

+1

Their stuff is pretty decent, not quite Arcteryx standards but then its about 1/2 the price...

NB My 1st Gen Gamma head torch, 5+ years old, lasted till the end of last year, when the FIL borrowed it and promptly dropped it breaking the battery lid.

Half the price of arcteryx? More like one sixth, surely?

I'm not an Alpkit fanboy, but I do have a filo and a filet. They are nice and warm but don't have the finish of some posher brands.

Good vfm in the sale five years ago. Prices now seem higher than other decent brands in the permanent sales we get on outdoor gear anyway.

I don't understand the cult-y enthusiasm for them, but maybe you have to be a bikepacker?

For clothes / fleeces / jackets I'm sure 1/2 is closer to the mark. It's been a few years since Alpkit were properly cheap. The Alpkit stuff I have is very good, though.

Their prices seem to have risen quite a bit in the last couple of years, no longer an absolute bargain, just a cheaper outdoor brand.

I suspect they'll be just like Skoda/Kia, start off dirt cheap then gradually go upmarket and become mainstream. NB Random factoid but Kia now have 8% market share in the UK!
