I've decided to reward my lad with a new acoustic as he has been progressing fantastically well with his playing. I'm know nothing about them and wondered if anyone could point me at some decent models and maybe give me some general pointers so I don't look a total numpty in the shop. He plays classical/ traditional at the moment and is past stage one and coming along very quickly according to his teacher..

So what's the budget? And will it be full size? I guess so.

A little while ago my daughter was rewarded with an Adam Black for a touch over £200, and it really is the business. Pick up (pre-amp/EQ built in), great tonal quality, nice action, and a gig bag!

That turned into a guitar junkie, there are now 4 in her room. 2 acoustics, a bass, and a semi.

And a Uklele, which is the mostest fun you can have with out a bike.

Yes it would be full size and the budget is probably to a max of 200-250.

I have spoken to his teacher who said that he is ready for a new one but didn't want to recommend a particular make as there are so many and he felt my lad should choose.

If your lad can play take him to the shops. He should be able to feel the differences between different models now and even two guitars of the same model can play very differently at that price. I bought an acoustic for my daughter a couple of years ago and there were lots of makes that I hadn't heard of before that played as well as the big names such as Yamaha

And it's fun :), loads of fun

Oh and don't worry about looking like a numpty in the shop, just tell them what you are looking for and a price and they will know what they have and let your lad try. That's it
