I am going to pick up a hire car at 11:30. It's classed on the booking as an 'intermediate' vehicle. That's all the info i have.

I wonder what it'll be? Closest guess wins a YouTube video of me revving the engine. 🙂

A bit of googling suggests intermediate is a Skoda Octavia-like vehicle.

So boring rep car here we come!....possibly.

I have no idea what a Hyundai i30 is.

*heads to google*

Edit: Hmm. That's not that bad I guess. Although assume it will be bottom of the line trim/extras.

Focus, 1.6 LX, in that sort of wishy-washy silver they do.

Picking up mine on Monday from Geneva Airport, I wanted to book an UP! (or UP! like vehicle) as it's only for a few hours, for 2 of us with hand luggage, but by the time I got around to booking it they were all out of UP!s so had to go wild and book a Polo, I bet I get a Ford though.

Might be lucky, after a big event Hire Cos find themselves with their stock all over the place - I was working for EuropCar in Sydney during the Olympics - someone booked an Echo (Yaris 'Estate' in UK speak) but we were fresh out, tried for a Corolla, nope, Calais (posh Commodore, which is a bit like a Vauxhall Omega) nope, Ford Falcon, nope, Land cruiser, nope - all that was left was the Halo fleet - two Audi TTs and a Commodore SS (think Vauxhall Omega with the engine and gearbox for a Corvette, because that's pretty much what it is) - there were 3 of them so we gave them the SS for a fortnight at the same price as the Echo, the SS usually got rented for a day, or maybe a weekend for someone to cruise around and impress their mates or do doughnuts so it usually cost hundreds a day to rent - the cheeky scamps, looked at it wide eyed, licked their lips and they complained it do 20mpg (more like 10 actually) and not the 40mpg or more the Echo did and managed to wangle a free tank of fuel out of it.

I'm picking mine up from the French side of the Airport the day after the Euros final, I suspect they'll be awash with cars, but then again, they might not be...

The last hire car I booked was a 'golf or similar.'

It was a brown Toyota corolla saloon.

Only now have I realised just how many brown cars are on the roads!

Oh and just for good measure it had a 1.4 petrol engine which made being overtaken by hgvs absolutely delightful

Tbh i would have probably been the same if i was driving any sorta distance.....

we did 2000 miles round california last year - the kid in me secretly wanted to upgrade to something nice with a drop top..... HOW EVER after getting 46mpg out of the focus i was quite happy - because that still cost a chunk of change - cant imagine the convertable mustang doing 46mpg and would have eaten into our budget for fun things more..... which given the car only moved every 3rd day or so was a significant ammount of our time vs looking like a hire car ****er every 3rd day 😀

Only an hour to go, and the tension's killing me. Can only wonder what the stress must be like for the OP 😯

I'm going with a Renault Captur. In a luminous shade of red.

It's killing me, Mogrim. I am going to have to put about 500 miles in this thing over the weekend, and all I can think of is the fact I am probably going to get a 1.4l petrol brown vauxhall astra.

On the plus side, £60 for 4 days wasn't too bad.

I am just leaving now to pick it up. I was supposed to get an email just before to let me know what it'll be. I in no way am assuming the lack of an email means there has been an issue with my booking.

Tried to book a hire car online once. Wanted a nice one.

Booked a High Class Escort for delivery to my hotel.

Didn't turn out quite as I expected.

Happy ending though. 😉

My brother just collected his booked intermediate car - for four on a two week stay in UK.

They had run out of vehicles, and offered him a transit with three seats(!) or a Corsa that was un-cleaned and had to be delivered from an hour away.....

Bit scratched up, but could be worse, and saves me worrying about getting a mint motor scratched.

Sat-Nav is a bonus.

1.5l Diesel Mondeo. All they had left, as fancied a faux by faux really.

Compared to a poo brown Focus, that's not a bad car. It'll be slow as hell, but should be frugal.

It's not the quickest. Gets to 70mph in about ten minutes.

Turns out I kinda know the guy who worked there. He said they'd have more choice if I wanted to swap it tomorrow, but not sure I can be bothered to. Cars a car really.

I was thinking that earlier when I boiled an egg while waiting for it to get up to 50. Think I might see if I can swap it for a Focus. Prob is, they only has 1.0 ecoboosts in. It seems most hire car fleets are underpowered.

Probably for good reason I guess.

Enjoyed that. Be sure to continue this game, whomever rents next. I was in '7-seater or similar' land on my last holiday and I'm not sure anyone would've guessed one of these 🙁

The DAB, well la-de-daa, radio was set to 1Extra.

I listened to it for a bit before feeling old, so switched to Radio 4 and the soothing sounds of You and Yours.

I get a few hire cars for work. Most are ok, some are truely awful (Fiat 500L). I recently had an Astra 2l diesel. It had enough power to scare my colleague when I was driving on some lake district B-roads.

i think the problem with hire cars is you can get used to nice ones, last hire in similar group was a fully blinded out Quashqai with a decent engine, so when you get something a bit meh, it's annoying.

I liken it to going out for a meal. Say you went the same place a week apart. The first time you paid £20 you got 3 courses (blinged out Quashqai), but the second time you paid the same but only got 2 courses (ratty mondeo). Just seems off, but you gotta accept it sometimes as its that or nothing.

We're currently driving around BC in a rather splendid Cadillac V6 sporty thing after being told by the nice man at Vancouver airport that they'd run out of what we'd booked. It's feature packed with goodies, so many in fact that I have to keep getting the manual out to see how it all works. The most important being how to switch off the ****ing stop/start function!

Mondeo? Well they don't hate you that much then. I used to get quite a few hire cars with work, have already mentioned the worst one, nothing incredibly exciting, maybe the best was a 307CC (yes really, it was fine to drive and of course it was available because it was the middle of winter, so I put on my down jacket and winter gloves and put the top down). Also had a V6 Vectra, which was a Vectra so not great to drive but fun in a straight line when you're not paying for the fuel - in the days when we could return the cars empty so I didn't even have to submit a claim for a full tank for a 200 mile round trip, though I was nursing it home having got the fuel gauge to under half on the trip out.

@scuttler best thing about being in that car is you don't have to look at the outside of it

In more positive news I had a DS and whilst I would never have chosen it it was a decent car. I rented a 500 once and would now never buy one.

Ooh I'd forgotten I once got an Alfa. Had booked an estate as we had quite a bit of kit and got this sportback thing which wasn't very practical. Just about fitted everything in though it was a squeeze -well I wasn't about to phone them up and ask for something different. A Mondeo would have been a better tool, but not as fun. That definitely beats the 307cc

I just parked the car at the local Tesco. It's longer than their parking spaces.

Apparently the Mondeo hatch is longer than the estate......well, by 4mm.

Now 2 of our party are making their own way at the weekend, tempted to chop it in for something smaller....means a new thread maybe 😀
