See in my mind, Nirvana and Pearl Jam are a bit like subterranean factions, waring on the same side, yet with very different front facing personas....
First two albums still stand up there. Truly timeless brilliance. The rest Dont like so much.. Kind of gave up on them a whle back. The most recent album is suppost to be brilliant though..
Temple of the dog as a side project were pretty good. Stone temple pilots had some genius moments.. Interstate love song being a stand out.
Alice in chains were another with a couple of great singles.
Might have to raid the cd collection later...
What is it you love about grunge, the angst, the seminal lyrics, the punk attitude with heavy feedback...
Love Ten. None of the other albums matched that for me, although they did do some later singles like Yellow Ledbetter.
Love AIC too. Dirt was such a great album.
Was never too fussed by Nirvana, I thought the other were better.
Alice in Chains: By far the most consistent and individual of the "grunge" movement (well, the popular ones, anyway).
Er, OP, have a word with yourself. Oh, and while you're at it remind yourself about Mudhoney.
[mutteringtoself]
Pearl Jam? Whatever next...?
[/mutteringtoself]
Really the answer is Bullet Lavolta.
Might a chap put Tool in the same sort of bracket?
Mudhoney
It always amazes me how often they get left out of these discussions.
Tool? No, they weren't/aren't grunge.
I'm pretty sure someone's supposed to say Tad, at this point.
Sunny Day Real Estate.
But yeah, I kind of love Pearl Jam.
Pearl Jam were never grunge....
Dinosaur Jr and pavement...
Fugazi anyone?
Still love Kyuss. Just a shame that Josh Homme turned into an utter arse
Kyuss weren't grunge either.
Like Eddie V - fantastic voice and always comes across really down to earth and genuine. The band were bobbins, though, in fairness - bunch of classic rock opportunists. Pretty accomplished, mind, and I guess they took their chance when it presented itself.
Alice in Chains are probably my fave band...so dark, I love it. Staley was one the best rock vocalists around.
Although part of the grunge movement...not sure Id class them as grunge, a bit heavier than that.
Green River, MLB, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney for me. Ten was a bloody good album though.
Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden.
Ten is a classic album. The high point of their career.
Nirvana were over hyped pish.
Tool? No, they weren't/aren't grunge
Yeah but they are better than all of grunge
AlC, Nirvana, they were the best imho, but only coz they burned brightly for a short while?
Pearl Jam, consistently put good stuff out, some of their later stuff is still great but...
Soundgarden very good, Audioslave was a great side project (well 1st album)
I know it ain't grunge but I dunno where else to lump it but Faith No More have done things, wonderful things love their latest stuff, I think Mike Pattinson genius has been his side projects, keeping it fresh Peeping Tom being the best example.
NIN definitely not grunge, but ****ing awesome
Which brings us back to Maynard..... Tool was kinda grunge, goth metal prog grunge, Perfect Circle upped the goth, Puscifer goth country hip hop.
The next Tool album can only be immense, after 10 years it better be
First two albums still stand up there. Truly timeless brilliance
See, I really like Ten. But I would never say it's timeless. It sounds like an early 90's album to me - with hints of the 80's thrown in. And some of their lyrics are, well, a bit cringeworthy.
Nirvana were over hyped pish.
Over hyped no doubt, pish - nah. Cobain was a staggeringly good front man. And Grohl hammered out some mean rhythm. Heart Shaped Box IMO is genius.
dude, it's Patton.Mike Pattinson
Faith No More aren't grunge in the slightest, but they are an incredibly influential and wonderful act. Regarding Patton side projects, Tomahawk kick ass.

On which note, where do The Melvins sit in this discussion?
Janes Addiction
dude, it's Patton
That was spellcheck
And maybe some beers
Kyuss weren't grunge either.
"The future of grunge music is now evolving from Palm Springs, California — a band named Kyuss,"
Dave Grohl, 1992 MTV interview
I reckon Dave gets to say what is and isn't grunge 😀
Dinosaur Jr and pavement...
Fugazi anyone?
Fugazi were (hopefully are) not grunge. Ian Mackaye would not be a happy chappy with this.
Sonic Youth should definitely be mentioned.
Mother love bone, chloe/crown of thorns.
Send no Flowers did a decent job repping the UK grunge thing. Kerbdog for the Irish angle. Soundgarden need to be mentioned.
Dave gets to decide nothing the sell out... Kyuss are stoner rock all day long.
santacoops
Paradox, break, seba, technimatic, tokyo prose... oh wait, wrong thread.
I like your style santacoops.
The godfather?

Tool? No, they weren't/aren't grunge
Yeah but they are better than all of grunge
Tool fans always come out with crap like this. So self congratulating.
Silverchair. ha! Fat boy
Some good bands discussed here but the whole 'grunge/not grunge ...' chat reminds me of aggressive xc / freeride lite / gnar ..... Etc
Anyway what about the pumpkins!?
Fugazi grunge? Get in the sea!
Jane's Addiction grunge? Get in a bit deeper!
How about crazy horse / Neil young ?
or this side of the pond - Bush?
weren't PJ a manufactured seatle band?
Either way ten was a brillinat album, verses was also good and vitalogy was underrated IMO. Everything since then was utter gash.
has anyone mentioned soundgarden yet?
The Afghan Whigs although Mudhoney have to be up there.
Bookmarking this one, lots to look up!
Do the Melvins classify as Grunge? One of Kurt's main influences n all that... I bloody love the Melvins
Grunge is a completely pointless catch all phrase. But of the "grunge" music from that time Nirvana is probably the only thing I still listen to. Just been listening to Incestiside, some brilliant songs on there. Nevermind has great songs but would have sounded so much better if Albini had produced it.
Some great bands in there.
A couple of modern ish ones for you
nine black alps a Manchester band, there first album everything is, is nirvana esq. Also the vines?
Do the Melvins classify as Grunge? One of Kurt's main influences n all that... I bloody love the Melvins
They're heading the Saturday at Temples Festival, in Bristol, this year. Already got my 3-day ticket
Bush well up there, sixteen stone is great, good call!

Yep. My experience of tool fans; Put Maynard on a pedestal like some kind of god. Sitting round a table post pub at 0100, snorting coke and trying to figure out what cryptic message he has whilst harping on about the complexity of the chord changes and timing. Yawn.
As for pearl jam - ten, vs, few songs off vitalogy and no code then it starts to rot. I just find them boring these days.
What defines grunge? Angst alt rock circa 1991? Cause all these bands are very different really.
Soundgarden aren't grunge either.
They're a rock band who just happened to be from Seattle and who got dragged on the grunge roller coaster when Nirvana hit the big time.
Mad season
Alice in chains
mud honey
I sodding hate pearl jam
Also not grunge but truly awesome: Jesus Lizard.
Sonic Youth,Pavement great bands but not grunge. You might as well say Husker Du were grunge
Screaming Trees and Dinosaur Jr for me
The correct answer is no because Pearl Jam transcended the genre with some epic song writing. A great band on any measure. But for me there's one very under rated challenger to the best grunge band...
Paw. Specifically their 1993 album Dragline. Such a good, down and dirty grungey subversive album. Look it up and be prepared to wonder why they never made it big!
Pearl Jam are to grunge what Linkin Park are to metal.
Well yes, as someone has already said, "define grunge". I've always had early Tool down in the grunge bracket (up to Undertow anyway).
Soundgarden, again, relative to what was labelled regular rock at that time, I'd stick them in the grunge bracket.
Alice in Chains.
Stone Temple Pilots.
Love Pearl Jam too.
....what was the question?
Can people just bog off, talking about Alice In Chains in the same breath as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Jesus Lizard, Soundgarden etc?
Grunge or not this thread has got me back on this album;
An absolute blistering banger from start to finish.
+1 for
Mudhoney(/Green River)
Dinosaur Jr.
Nirvana
Bush
and
Pearl Jam are to grunge what Linkin Park are to metal.
Meat Puppets if no-one's mentioned them but I've probably missed it.
Soundgarden
Grunge never really existed, at least as a proper genre that any good artists would associate themselves with. It was coined by the mainstream music press as Teen Spirit went global. That was the end of a really great period of American post punk music. You'd be better off checking out the other Sub Pop label artists before this period and other more diverse artists like the Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Fugazi etc.. for some really good stuff. Alice in chains! Says it all.
There's still some excellent bands on Sub Pop
Passing a kidney stone.
Yes there is!
Funk/Soul
Classical
Folk
Krautrock/Motorik
Psych/Stoner/Doom/Sludge (!)
If you like grunge try Boris, Isis (if only theyd known!) and (albeit more manic yet great) - Green Milk From The Planet Orange. Also Thumpermonkey. Deffo Thumpermonkey.
