My girlfriend has bought me a kit (or at least some of a kit) to grow mushrooms at home. However, I can't work out how to do it, and there are no instructions!
There seem to be many ways of doing it, but very few (well, none I can find) guides on how to grow mushrooms with the kit I have...
Sac02 bag
Sac02 box (like a tupperware, but with a filter similar to that on the bag, plus 6 grey dots I assume on can inject through), which contains some sort of substrate (?)
Perlite
Vermiculite
I'm pretty sure I need some spores, I assume in liquid form, to inject.
Anyone know what I need to do, or can point me in the direction of an easy to follow guide?
As titivating as it might be, I'm aiming for Oyster mushrooms, rather than anything more exciting 😉
We grew some grew oyster mushrooms at home on the window sill, but it was an all-in-one kit using coffee grounds as a substrate. And very nice they were too.
Yes, you need to inoculate some substrate (unless already present and inoculated) with your chosen spores/spawn, then incubate, then place somewhere to fruit. I think. The rest is alchemy, widdershins and incantations. Maybe start here if growing oyster mushrooms
In the summer , particularly after a rainy spell, we had magic mushrooms* growing sporadically in the back garden . I would go out first thing in the morning and pick up 20 to 30 of the things. They would just be sat vertical on the grass, and you just lifted them out, they weren’t embedded into the ground. Next morning , exactly the same. Then repeat for 5-6 days. Then they would stop, just like that.
* I jokingly called them magic mushrooms, but when I looked them up it would appear it was exactly what they were. I used to bag them up in the dog turd bags and get rid of them in the shit bin up the road. I often wondered what the legal standpoint was if you had a few dozen class A’s in the yard 😂

I think it depends whether it's a work thing or a party?
If the magic mushrooms are growing wild its no crime. If you pick and dry them it is as you have "processed them". It used to be that fresh picked ones were OK but I think the law got changed on that

Very good!
I knew a guy at uni who grew the more 'exotic' kind of mushroom. From memory he used to get syringes of spores that he injected into a sterilised bag of grow medium (vermiculite mix), then when the mycelium started growing, would transfer into trays kept in a heated fish tank. He would get two or three flushes of fruit from each tray.
The process is the same for any kind of mushroom, culinary or funky.
Thanks guys, appreciate it!
Having looked at a few guides, it does seem that the use of Sac02 bags etc is a little different, maybe...
I'll have a look at Mark's for some spores, and mebbe ask him for advice!
Good luck OP. Let us know how you get on! I think that mushrooms are another modern casualty of our aboriginal past. Much of Europe would prize, harvest and include a wide variety of edible mushrooms in their diets. Yet (at least in modern Britain) fungi seem now to have achieved the diminished status of either something generic (Agaricus bisporus) as a sort of grudging afterthought ‘on the side’ (or else a drug-related joke ‘hur hur, magic mushrooms’ etc)
We should reclaim our reverence for the mighty mushroom, and in all of it’s forms? (ie foods/tastes/nutrients, medicinal, psychotropic/therapeutic)

A new leathery material is being made from mycelium
I marinaded and baked some king oyster mushroom slices recently and was hugely impressed. Very savoury (umami) moreish flavours and meaty texture. Keen also to try/experiment with some chicken of the (woods if I can ever find some!)
