Hi,
We have got quotes for external wall insulation from a few companies for the house and the loft under the Green Deal. The house is solid brick and rendered on top - the loft is thermolite brick on top on the existing solid wall on the side (semi-detached house) and the back. The loft is also finished in render. The main house and the loft are flush so there is no edge tapering between them.
My question is it OK to have external wall insulation for the loft given that it is made from theromlite brick? My feeling is that it can - but it requires special screws to attach the external wall insulation.
Any technical help would be much appreciated?
Thanks,

Yes. If the contractor is made aware of this then thy'll get the EWI sytem manufacturer to carry out calculations to allow for this. You can install EWI over pretty much any existing construction detail

Again the fixing types and spacings are all determined based on the existing construction details and will be chosen to suit by the system manufacturer.
Excellent - thanks for the advice.
Have you checked your window sills? The extra depth of the EWI and render can mess them up.
When we had our other place clad we fitted slate below the window sills - works well and looked nice.

Can I ask how much per m² they charge for the external insulation etc ?
I assume you are looking at the insulation panel , screwed to the wall, with a tyvek type wrap, mesh and render.
I am looking to do similar , so would be good to get an idea of costs
It varies depending on the level of ancillary works required e.g extending eaves / gutters / downpipes etc and the complexity of scaffolding / access that would be required.
If you budget for £85 - £90 per m2 you won't be far away.
Cheers Perchypanther, thats something to work with
Beware there are a lot of things to consider before rushing into external wall insulation. Good workmanship is absolutely crucial to preventing issues with dampness and mold inside your house.
Window and door details - will the depth of insulation cause issues with cill overhangs and how will you insulate window reveals on the outside if the windows dont sit flush with the external wall? Damp proof course - this must not be bridged by the wall insulation or dampness will bypass the damp course and come through the wall into your house. Ventilation details such as bathroom fans - again careful detailing needed here to ensure you dont leave cold spots where condensation will form.
There's other considerations but they get more technical. I'll dig out my notes from a course I did on this years ago (I have an SQA qualification in energy efficievny measures for older and traditional buildings).
