C_g wanted a definition of rock, well this is as good as any;
Double kick-drum, check
Hammond organ, check
Screaming vocalist, check
Wall of Marshall amps, check
Notice the second kick-drum being brought in at the beginning; apparently, when they recorded it, they had to 'borrow' Keith Moon's, which just happened to be conveniently to hand
To this I would also add
Nantucket Sleighride -Mountain
Join Together -Who
No One Knows -QUOTSA
Might've missed it as work PC won't show embedded links but surely one of them has to be ..... The Rocker, Thin Lizzy (live of course!)
Pretty Vacant .
Thread Closed.
Is this isn't the perfect rock song then I'd like to know why:
The Wildhearts - Caffeine Bomb
wot? no death traps and suicide raps?
Focus-Hocus Pocus
Sabbath-National Acrobat
Rush-Spirit of Radio
Sabbath-Heaven and Hell
Velvet Revolver-Slither
Heavens Basement-Welcome Home
5 Punk
5.1 Punk rock
5.2 New wave
5.3 Post-punk
5.4 New waves and genres in heavy metal
5.5 Heartland rock
5.6 Emergence of alternative rock
6 Alternative
if you're doing this chronologically then you've missed out "goth" somewhere between 5.3 and 6. Unless it IS "6 Alternative".
There were at least two bands that started out as "punk" and morphed into "goth" during the 80s. I give you The Damned and Siouxsie And The Banshees - from New Rose & Love Song to Curtain Call and Sanctum Sanctorum, from Hong Kong Garden & Metal Postcard to Spellbound & Israel...
Pat Benatar- Heartbreaker
Sabbath-National Acrobat
*A* National Acrobat.
Oh - the big guy
Teenrat got it right. Gimmie Shelter by the Rolling Stones is the all time greatest.
OP was right - Zep Stairway! 8)
To define, "best rock song" I think it has to make you mosh a bit, PIG somewhat (play imaginary guitar)and headbang, no matter where you are.
If that's the case
Whole lot of Rosie wins
Iron maiden infinite dreams for me.
Queens of the stone age - Go with the flow
In its own mind, it has to be Motown Junk by the Manics.
But it ought to really be something more like this.
Love ad/cd.... But for me it's Shoot to Thrill that unstoppably makes you nod your head.
And if that's our definition, like someone has suggested....
Then I there is one band that does that better than any other.... And you may not like it, but it's true ..... The Quo !
Someone post up a vid of Caroline please (can't do it on me ipad).... Ta
Oh and a special head nodding, air guitar playing mention to Thin Lizzy with The Boys are back in Town..... Best bass run ever
Alice in Chains - Confusion
I think I'd say the same thing tomorrow.
Tricone - Member
Teenrat got it right. Gimmie Shelter by the Rolling Stones is the all time greatest.
"Charie's good tonight, innee"...
For me it's probably this
Though something like Gimme Shelter is probably more timeless. And a ****ing brilliant song as well. So maybe my vote goes to that actually.
Can't believe that we've got to page 3 and no one has suggested Radiohead's The Bends.
I can't believe some cretin is even mentioning Radiohead in a thread called "Greatest Rock Song of all time?"
If we mean rock rather than rock and roll, punk rock, blues rock, folk rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock or metal I would say probably something like: -
- You Really Got Me. The Kinks
- Louie Louie. The Sonics
- Born in the USA. Bruce Springsteen
- I Can See for Miles. The Who
- Immigrant Song. Led Zeppelin
- Teenage Kicks. The Undertones
- The Bends. Radiohead
- She Sells Sanctuary. The Cult
- Where the Streets Have No Name. U2
- Cum on Feel the Noize. Slade
- Start Me Up. The Rolling Stones
Probably something by the Stones. Sympathy has what I think great guitar solos are about, not flashy or overdone, to the point and blistering. Southern Man by Neil Young is another great example as are Sting Me and Remedy by The Black Crowes.
Sting Me and Remedy are brilliant tunes. Playing The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion only the other day!
Aye, its a great album. And whilst I'm at it anybody suggesting November Rain needs to go out and have a good long talk with themselves. What a lot of self indulgent musical ****ery. That's the point Slash and Duff should have got a new singer.
For me, a bit of Creedence...
For me it has to be one inch man by Kyuss, DC sound attack / electric worry by Clutch or fortunate son by Creedence. As others have said, there's just too much choice over too many years 😥
If there can be only one...
Stairway - Zep
/thread
Jimmy Barnes drivin wheels from the album freight train heart
Someone post up a vid of Caroline please (can't do it on me ipad).... Ta
Dunno about Caroline, here's one of their best rockers for you:
Down The Dustpipe. Done on me iPad... 😉
For catchy non pc love song try G'n'R Used to love her. 😯
