My daughter and myself are running this years GNR for Macmillan Cancer Care and we're staying in Morpeth the night before . We've been told by the hotel people that it's fairly straightforward for us to get to the startline area on Sunday ( just me and my daughter by taxi / bus ) . So far so good . My wife is flapping a bit about where she can park the car nearish to the finish once her and my lad check out of the hotel later on . Are there any locals on here with with any helpful knowledge ? Thanks in advance
It's an extremely organised event so she'll have little trouble, traffic getting out will be slow though.
Book Lolla Rossa for food the night before.
Thanks, some good info there already
Could you not leave the car at the hotel then all travel back to that on the bus?
Wrightyson , if there's an easy enough bus service going back that way then we'll definitely look at that but I think what the wife is thinking is to just check out of the hotel asap in the morning and then head towards the finish area with the view of trying to get out of the area as quick as possible afterwards . I'm in work at 4am Monday morning so want to get on our way sharpish
Mrs Gastro has completed the GNR a number of times. After a couple of years we found some great free parking and you avoid most of the slow queues leaving the finish. This might be a bit of a monster post but here's my experience over the years.
Don't park in Newcastle and get the Metro or bus to the finish. The Metro to South Shields is very busy and the line for the metro to get back to Newcastle is massive and takes ages.
Don't park on the field at the finish. The queue to get out of the car park and past the road closures takes ages.
We park on Grosenor Road in South Shields near South Tyneside College / South Shields Marine School. You can park on the street for free but you need to get there early. The finish line is approx 5 mins walk and easy to find. For the runners there are buses leaving the finish car parks and taking you to the start. It cost £5 a couple of years ago and is full of runners chatting excitedly. At the end of the race you can get away from South Shields and back to the A1 fairly easily compared to the official car parks. Your wife will be ae to get close to the finish line. There are loads of places to stand and watch the runners finish and the atmosphere is brilliant and friendly.
So my advise would be that you all get up early and check out of the hotel and get to South Shields. Park on the street near the college so you can get away quickly. You will also benefit from having your car and clean clothes 5 min walk from the finish.
Enjoy the day it's a great event.
Gastro, as a GNR virgin, thanks for that. C-Jumper, what colour are you?
Gastro , thanks mate I think she’ll head towards the college for parking . DUCKMAN , our race labels are white with black numbers on with a pale blue band across the bottom if that’s what you mean
It also says ZONE F
By the college is a good shout. There are plenty of other streets nearby off Redhead Park that will also be fine if Grov is full.
