Nice to hear something positive about Britain for a change, don't know what made us different from 1930's Germany and the US but glad we are.
Apparently in WWII US Army officers went round the pubs local to where GIs were stationed in Britain asking them not to serve black GIs as at that time bars in the US were segregated. To their everlasting credit the publicans told them where to go.
Very good. Will make a note to watch the programme
"Is this Ala-what's-it educated?," the older man had asked."My dear man, that boy is more educated than you and I will ever be," was Charles's reply. It was quite a retort coming from a man who had himself studied at Oxford.
Great quote!
It's not all rosy, racism was -and is - still rife but for whatever reason we didn't go down the route of anti-miscengenation laws (sp?) etc. Non-European people have been in Britain for far longer than most folk realise.
Britain through rose-tinted specs from the Beeb, whatever next? More self-congratulatory nonsense, more market spooking, more propaganda from Blair, Brown, Cameron or the Queen herself? No seriously, has the man ever visited Leicester?
