Anyone know if this is reasonable?
Its a obviously sensitive subject, but it has been a few years and for various reasons involving in law arguments i am trying to get a relatives headstone installed. I have a contact at work who has offered to help me out as he is quiet at the moment. Seems a lot to me or is it because of our choice of material?
Its a bit steep for us at the moment to be honest

Looking at the quote, even if the stone was free it would still be £600.
Depends on how long I guess you want to be able to read in inscription, to what stone you use.
Probably want to ask what the benefit of the NAMM approved ground anchor system is and what the other alternatives are?
To be honest I was expecting a quote of about £600 I can do that i reckon
this lot seem a bit cheaper;

How well do you knwo this 'contact at work'?
Not that well which is why i'm checking it out really
It does look like he may just charging his normal rate rather than doing you a favour?
Phone a few local monumental masons and ask for quotes too - will give you a good idea for going rate in your area.
Having gone through this a few years ago the cost of the stone is a major variable, we looked at some lovely stone but it was only available in very limited supply which meant the cost was massive.
There was a charge per letter carved, which varied from hand carving to water CNC cutting.
Then two people to visit site to erect the stone after the ground had settled.
All in I think is was £1200 / £1300, but I believe that included the VAT.
NAMM (national assosiation of memorial masons) approved fixing is a must in most cemeteries/churchyards as its regulation..and i'd insist on it..
Same as BRAMM (british register of accredited memorial masons) you can check on BRAMMs site if the company is registered , there are two parts to registration, the company can be registered , then you have fixers liscence (FIXER is just what is used in the trade to describe the person fitting)
both methods use specific size dowels/dowel holes for the size of the stone and use a ground anchor system in the sub-base and foundation
Depends on the local council but both are very similar.

Is the stone a 4" thick or 3" its may be a bit steep if 3" but not unreasonable, if the guy is good at his job you will pay a bit more for the quality of workmanship..and there is a big variation unfortunatley.
Check his garrantee, good people garrantee workmanship/material faults for 5-10 years as a rule.
If you shop around make sure you compare like for like in every aspect...like everything you get what you pay for.
Is there any ornamentation or carving on the stone besides the inscription..?
Not cheap things!

Slate is often the most expensive.. Granite should be the cheapest for similar size and design...
Thats why you see lots of it now compared to 30 years ago when marble was cheapest...
Granite will be imported from China and India , they are putting up the price a bit now mind cos they have us by the short and curlies...

Nope just name and birth death dates just a simple stone is all we want
Thanks for the replies chaps!
Oh if its in a church yard you may be restricted to certain materials aswell, they are often very fussy..despite what might already be there you may have to have grey granite(honed finsh, which is kind of satin eggshell look) or sandstone "avoid..."
Granite is best for the long term..
Granite is best for the long term..
This was our reasoning too, ok will call a few others but it might have to be interest free credit card time!
Had the father in laws done in Welsh slate and designed / carved by a very good craftsman we paid aroung £3.5K Quality isn't cheap.
"Nope just name and birth death dates just a simple stone is all we want"
Its a bit steep then to be honest.. id say between £600 and £800 inc vat + the cemetery fee which has to be paid to the local council or Parish Council which ever it is (unavoidable im affraid and he will have to pay that up front for the permit to be granted)
Where abouts are you..?
Surrey/sussex border horsham/cranleigh area
Ok..sorry im way up norff..use the bramm postcode search it will help find people for you .. then check them out..
Hope that helps..
Cheers Eh thanks for that
