I try but fail. Neighbours do a lovely diamond pattern.
There’s a person in our village who has a HUGE garden and the grass is just empeccable! I don’t know how they do it!
Often: gardener!
If not: probably retired.
Don’t bother with stripes - got my girls to look after mine, October to April, zero effort required 😁

I do the outsides and work in, like a sort of rectangular spiral. Very pleasing since it gets faster as you go
I might mix it up! Ours is almost easier to work from the seating outwards in a circle…. It’d look like a crop circle from a plane…. Well if it wasn’t for the house adjoined to it!
Wow what an incredible sight!! Fair play, it looks photoshopped that but I don’t think it is clearly… more just the clarity of the photo 👍
I'm going for maximum number of dandelions per square metre.
So far knocking it out the park.

Unfortunately, the animals round here start with the plants and by the time they get round to eating the grass it's either frozen solid or under snow...
I've been denied a goat by SWMBO as it would eat all the plants before it started on the grass. Details details.

A selection of mine:
Though not straight this stripe was my best… A turn by turn accurate depiction (in grass) of the course of the River Severn and River Tern around that part of Shropshire
Houns is winning.
For the record my lawn looks like shit.
I've got some stripes where I left a pallet down a bit too long last week. 3 nice pale green stripes to be precise. The rest is a mix of grass, moss and I think clover. Either way it's green and soft and nice to be on in the summer.
I struggle with the concept of lawns.
Oh don’t get me wrong, I wish all lawns were left to grow and become wild.

I recall in the mid-80s there was a media-based lawnmower advert battle between Qualcast and Flymo to see which mower gave the best stripes. IIRC Flymo, after much bluff & bluster, didn't turn up to the showdown.
Does anyone else remember this, or did I invent it?
Incidentally, yesterday I mowed my lawn for the first time since approx early July. There are no stripes on it, it's mainly moss.😑
Some good efforts here!! I’d love a bigass mower as ours is small and elec, I reckon that would bring on the stripe quality!

That looks much more like a striped lawn. The first pic at the start of the thread the grass is way too long. For strips it needs to be short.
I’m going for maximum number of dandelions per square metre.

I dunno, I reckon we might give you a run for your money...
Nice shot of the Mytton there Houns.
No chance! Between the kids and the dogs I am lucky if I have anything to cut at all.
Plenty of clover in that lawn Houns 😉
I sharpened my mower (rotary) blades the other day..boy does that make a big difference to the cut too!
DrP
I recognise #4 Houns, up Atcham way?
I was just responsible for the cutting, not the weed control :0)
Yes, all pictures at Attingham where I worked for a short while
Mytton was perfect for a Friday evening post work pint

I aspire to striping a bit of the lawn, but then I decide 'next year' 😀
Ewan keep that lawn exactly as is!
What's a decent mower for making such stripes then? Or will any with a roller do? My petrol mower is on its way out as rust has knackered the main body of it. It has no roller but I fancy replacing it with one that does. Lawn is only 50ft square so not huge.
Any with a roller will do. The Hayter I used in pix above was heavy and cumbersome, yes the finish was nice but it was a PITA to use
i dont get lawns.
mine is longish grass with loads of flowers and stuff growing through it. the wind put them there.
Yes. Here's a few from work. Used to get better stripes with the hayter roller but I can't be doing with lugging that beast around now so have a lovely lightweight battery Stihl mower, no roller now. Like to keep my small back lawn neat but have made a meadow of my front bank.

Just done mine and feel the need to share - picture includes the reason it’s not a great lawn and regularly has holes in!
https://flic.kr/p/2nUtBbs
A neighbour of mine has been doing the exact same stripes for so long that there are actually grooves in the lawn from where the wheels on the mower go. It's not even a very nice lawn, loads of moss and horrible straggly grass.
His mum and dad built the place and he was born there, now in his late 80s and retired since his 50's.
Never have stripes on mine, the robomower just randomly trundles round cutting the grass daily...
Just put a tonne of topsoil and seed onto the lawn. This after taking out a whole wheelie bin of moss and dead material. Should be green and lush in two weeks. The guy who did it has form. Here’s his previous work
https://www.housebeautiful.com/design-inspiration/a20777609/windsor-castle-plaid-lawn-royal-wedding/
Btw there is a skill called double width stripes that he’s awesome at and I can’t do.
(I just shovelled the top soil into a wheelbarrow and placed it where he said)
How about some autumn stripes, after I mulch cut the cherry orchard.

Challenge accepted, though you may have to wait until next week
I love the 'wild' lawns.
Nature needs the clover, dandelions, long grass and no mow. However this doesn't have to be the whole lawn, just a section, or as myti has done a neat back lawn and a natural front.
There’s a person in our village who has a HUGE garden and the grass is just empeccable!
This appears to be a field.
Loosing the light wavey lines.

I'm thinking I might do it in the form of a big game of Snake
It’s time to cut the grass therefore invoking a weekly cut for the next six months, isn’t it…
.
Got to say there are some beautiful gardens in this thread! Are you all retired?

Thats what i was thinking! Having issues with my lawn had my lawn laid 2 years ago and it's really looking bad now
I’m thinking I might do it in the form of a big game of Snake
Looks like the figure in cheesybeanz's garden is having a game of small snake,(reported to the office of obscene statues)😆 🤣
Anyway, striped lawns?,come on STWers, where's all the (no mow)rewilding* shots
*CBAed cutting it.
Got to say there are some beautiful gardens in this thread! Are you all retired?
Unfortunately not - it's how Hounds and myself (possibly a couple more) earn our livings.
New work place = new mowers. This Dennis is a beast! Spent most of last week scarifying, this week I’ve given the lawns a cut, so difficult to get stripes straight/even when there are numerous lines from pre and post scarifying cutting, plus the scarifying lines too!
This was about 1/4 of the moss we removed
And if harrowing counts then these are approx 800m long
Scorchio ☀️
