We have a Wii u and it gets loads of use but driving games are lacking.
I am thinking of getting a new console for Christmas for the kids and driving games are high priority.
Gran Toursimo Sport looks very very good.
The lad (11) likes the look of Forza, especially with the Hotwheels DLC.
He's not yet in a group of gamers so it's not a case of getting what his friends have.
Any thoughts on which is the better.
I'm thinking that the usual minecraft, Lego etc will be much of a muchness on either system.
No 4K telly so this generation is adequate.
Edit: Any racing games with rally or rally cross options would be v popular too.
Project Cars 2 also has Rally Cross
The Forza horizon games on the XBOX One are a big hit in my house with the children aged 7, 9 and 39.
The Dirt series of games are also good and more rally focused.
There are two types of Forza.
Forza x/6/7 are pure racing sims, so all on road race tracks.
Forza Horizon 1/2/3 are open world driving games. It’s this that has the Hotwheels DLC. Loads of fun.
Horizon 3 on XBox One S would do the trick.
Definitely Forza Horizon 3 on the Xbox One.
Played by a 14 year old, 9 year old and me. My 4 year old daughter has started to play it too as she can just drive around, smash into things and jump over things giggling the whole time.
As mentioned, the other games are more race orientated. You need to complete races or specific challenges in FH3 to progress through the game and unlock new stuff but it is an open world game.
Soooooo looking forward to GT Sport. It's been a long time coming!
Been playing the open beta of GT Sport this week and swithering over whether to buy it myself. It is very good but being a racing sim maybe not so much fun for an 11yr old.
Plenty older (v.cheap) open world driving games available for PS4 too.
eg. The crew. Burnout paradise. Need for speed Most wanted/Rivals.
The ultimate open world driving around/racing game on both consoles is GTAV by a mile though. Played online with the sound muted it's actually fairly harmless for an 11yr old. (Single player not so much) But play it yourself and make that decision based on your experience rather than some noddy off the internet.
Choice of console is more a choice between whether it's for you or your boy.
kids tend to have X-box. Adults PS4.
many households have both.
microsoft are pricing the xbone S very aggresively, and you get forza in straya free in most bundles.
https://www.xbox.com/en-gb/xbox-one/consoles/xbox-one-s/forza-horizon-3-hot-wheels-500gb
so get one of them.
my one spends 99% of it's time being a media center anyway.
I bought an XBox One S a couple of months back and I'm pretty well hooked on Forza Horizon 3! Top notch game. It's got proper driving sim dynamics (for the most part) in an arcade open world environment. Perfect balance and the other games (some of which are very good.. F1 2017, Destiny 2, etc) have barely had a look in.. I nearly bought Forza7 the other day but will wait til it's come down in price a bit and I've took some of the other games out the wrappers!!
The off road races with the Ariel Nomad as weapon of choice are great fun and quite challenging.
could i add another game (the crew) to your list. on both xb1/ps4 and pc
yes it is an arcade style driving/racing game, but it had a huge map to explore where you can go literally anywhere in it.
it also has motorcycles.
i love the game i have to say.
EDIT you do need to buy wild run expansion for the motorcycles, should have added that.
The off road races with the Ariel Nomad as weapon of choice are great fun and quite challenging.
+1 for Horizon 3.
I hated Horizon 3 for the first hour and then I got my head round how it worked. After that loved it.
Great game, mix of open world driving, crazy stunts, dirt tracks and properish races. I also play Forza 6 but it needs more concentration and effort. Horizon 3 you can dip in and out of easily.
I haven't played GT since PS2 days, but it was always a 'simulation'. Forza X is in the same vein as trying to be a serious racer.
Forza Horizon X is the arcadey 'fun' version of Forza. And it's an utter blast, you'd be hard pressed not to have fun with it if you like driving games. You can still cock about with micro-managing if you want, but really, auto-upgrade, next.
Also,
The Hotwheels add-on is brilliant insanity. I'd advise you to play the main game until you're at the point of going "yeah, bored now, maybe I should trade this in, what else have you got?" It's a paradigm shift, playing HW from the outset would be a waste.
I don't think any racing game since gran turismo has struck a good balance between sim and fun.
Some of the need for speed and forza have come close but failed.
Forza 7 is really good but it's flawed in the sense you just don't feel like you are really driving in the same sense as grand turismo.
Although they do say if you adjust the dead zones on the pad, it is better, I've not had time to play about with control pad sensitivity.
Been waiting for Gt sport for ages. Loved GT4 on the ps2 you see but I just like doing laps in a nice car,
Not really into the whole online thing that Gt Sport has so I'm out until I get a cheap copy or find out it is actually ok for how I want to play.
Mucho dissapointo
So Luke. you're disappointed with a product you've been looking forward to for years. Don't own and have no actual no experience of? That's pretty good going. Even for here. 😆
There's actually going to be loads of single player content in this one.
it's £39.85 at shopto.net I don't think you'll find it much cheaper anytime soon. Not this year anyway.
Smyths £38.99
If only I had a free and enjoyable way of getting to and from my local Smyths store tomorrow.
oh... wait 😆
Errr! They do home delivery.
Whatever game you get, get a steering wheel and pedals. It takes it to a whole new level. 😉
GT Sport turns up tomorrow and hopefully a G29 wheel/pedals/gearstick sometime over Christmas. 😀
The ****ers put the price up since I posted.
ha ha
unhappy hour?
😉
I've been caning GT sport beta on the PS4pro in all its 4k HDR beauty. I have been out of the gaming world for the best part of a decade and it's absolutely stunning to look at. Just wish my old g25 wheel was ps4 compatible. It's going to be so much better with a wheel.
Kids have an Xbox one and between the disaster that was GT6 and fun that is horizon 3 and Forza 6 I'm almost converted after having played all the GT games to death.
Never thought I'd say it though
Forza 7 is great fun as is horizon. I sold my Xbox though and play Forza on the pc. I have a PS4 pro but I'm not tempted by GT Sport, it just doesn't seem like the old GT1 and 2 which were ace. But I will keep a eye on it and see what the reviews say.
Ok. If anyone still cares.
Spent 10 hours playing GTSport now.
Honest opinion. Don't buy it for an 11 yr old. Buy it if you are a massive car geek. (I'm not)
I'd forgotten what an absolute nightmare Polyphony make navigating menus. it's an absolute ball ache. and that's without even going near the car tuning/customisation aspect.
For example. Altering car settings to meet entry requirements for online races in the lobbys (with randoms) means navigating back through lots of menus/pages every time.
It took a mate about ten minutes to even find his Garage last night.
Servers were shit and we couldn't even set up a race between mates.
(this should improve).
Oh... and I'd also forgotten about all the WAITING... Waiting for EVERYTHING!
Don't get me wrong. The actual racing/driving is really really good. They've just managed to suck all the fun out of every other aspect in favour of making it look all glitzy and Gran Turismoish.
Persevering with it and filling up your garage with cars ready for every occasion is a big part of it. But until you get to that point it's always going to be a PITA and you're always going to be at a disadvantage in races unless you put hours into car set-up.
They LIED about single player being a big part of this one. As far as I can see it's either Licenses, "Missions" or the GT Sport aspect. GT Sport seems to be pre-entering various races and WAITING ages for them to start.
GT5 (I think it was 5 - PS3 anyway) had a "shuffle" lobby setting where you could just choose tracks and car class and each round you'd be given a selection of random (but similar performance) cars. so each round you'd be in a different car. Everyone on the same tyres/settings etc.
I loved that. This is the opposite as far as I can see.
Definitely not GT sport for kids. Currently typing this while ignoring compulsory video on sportsmanship before being allowed to enter a race. FFS
Cheers Gwurk it’s a lot of that from previous one that put me off playing them, don’t think I’ll bother.
FH3 Hotwheels and Blizzard Mtn are fun but I still prefer bombing around Byron, Surfers, Country and Outback - reminds me sooooo much of my year in Oz up in northern NSW. Here's why - https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/oct/18/forza-horizon-3-game-perfect-skies-photorealism-detail
I'm a massive car nerd, i really like gtsport. tbh i just spend hours doing time trials
Prefer it to PC2, much more playable with a controller
I assumed the lack of single player content was because it was a Beta, because I agree, what’s there is shit. It needs a proper ‘career’ mode.
I’m not a member of PSN, because I play my PS4 for about 30 mins a month, so if it’s going to be so heavily focused on the online aspect, I’m out sadly.
The Golf GTI looked stunning though, ridiculously realistic, even the steering wheel texture and desk board fonts are right!

I've been playing it for about a year on my Xbox One, but I cannot wait to play it on my Christmas present... an Xbox One X on a 46in 4k tv 🙂 The 8 year old can suffer with HD.
A proper career mode may well come with updates NJee.
Previous GT games were massively updated after release.
some updates good/some not so.
PSN is free.
PS+ is around £30 a year and gives you around 4 free games every month you can play as long as your subscription is valid plus free online saves/data storage - Extremely usefull if your PS4/HDD dies - from experience. :/
I've been watching from the sidelines on GT Sport... 🙁
Enjoyed GT4 and GT5P - put a lot of time into GT5, but ultimately it didn't live up to my expectations (long development time, poor AI, poor physics)
GT Sport needs more "ordinary" cars for me - and offline career mode.
(I absolutely love hooning around in the tuned up Abarth 500s in Asseto Corsa on PS4)
Am very tempted to press "buy" on GT, but suspect I'd feel let down
Any other thoughts from folks who've tried it?
Update if anyone is interested.
I now have a good 50hrs play time on GT Sport and 50 cars in my garage now so thought I'd come back to this thread to update my initial thoughts.
All the waiting I moaned about in my first comments has gone and with the first few updates the whole thing got a lot slicker.
Now I know my way round the menus they're far easier to navigate (still not as easy or intuative as I'd like though.
The actual game play is awesome.
Graphics awesome.
Servers flawless.
Online racing (with friends) is great.
Single player (Not Arcade) is online rather than against AI and is massively improved from what was available at launch. the GT Sport aspect promotes fair racing and punishes dirty racing through the ranking sytem. so if you're half decent at driving and not a dick you'll get way more out of the game.
The campaign is split into 3 categories. and all 3 are designed to teach you how to become a better driver.
Driving School - self explanitary, a series of challenges to pass with either bronze, gold or silver starting off with simple braking challenges, cornering, then progressing to segments and entire laps.
Missions - More advanced than Driving School but also a series of challenges awarded with gold, silver, bronze beginning where Driving School has taken you and going on to races/challenges
Circuit experience - is similar to the segment/lap challenges but lets you choose every track in the game so it basically teaches you the tracks and the fast lines, braking zones etc. through challenges.
There are far less cars than the last 2 GT games. But I don't see that as a bad thing particularly. there's a great selection in every category so you'll definitely find something to suit your particular driving style.
The tuning is still there if you want to geek out on your power/gear/weight/downforce ratios etc.
liveries are completely customisable so if you're a computer arty/designery type you can customise everything from your helmet to your tyres. for folk like me with very little skill in that dept there are thousands other folk have done and shared for you to use for free.
Press BUY.
It’s appeared on PS Store in the Black Friday deals for £24.99 for the standard edition.
I'd say it's well worth £25, I got it to cheer myself up after the disappointment of WW2 and I'm really enjoying it.
£18.99 at Argos looks like it’s fallen on it’s arse.

Glad I cancelled my pre order now 😀
