GPX Heatmap for yourself

I was wondering if anyone knew an app or another method that'll do what I'm after?

Basically, every week, myself and the other half do a walk, following a GPX route, usually one that I've exported from the OS Maps app, or one that I've plotted myself.  I also do this with rides.

I always like a new route and I've started to forget where we've been exactly in our reachable day trip radius, so often we're crossing old ground.  Not the end of the world of course but you know.

Is there something that I can upload all of my GPX files to, that'll show them all at once, kind of like a Strava Heatmap, but not a Strava Heatmap?

I can then plot new routes based on that and minimise repeats due to my memory!

https://wandrer.earth/dashboard/my_places links to Strava and shows where you've been.

I don't record my walks on Strava and only have a free account if that makes a difference.

Veloviewer does a nice job of this. I’ve got a nice map of all my activities over years. But you need a Strava premium account and then to pay a subscription for Veloviewer itself so probably not what you are after.

You don't need Strava Premium to use the "heatmap" function of VeloViewer. Mine works fine with the free version.

I was previously using Basecamp but that was just an extra hassle of uploading all my activities to my PC.

I believe Garmin Explore has a similar function, though I've not tried it.

Thanks @scotroutes. I thought there was some issue a while back where everything stopped working in VeloViewer if you weren’t a Strava premium member. But I’m obviously remembering it wrong or it changed again.

You don't get any of the Strava segment/KOM stuff, or the VeloViewer score unless you're Strava Premium. Not something I was interested in anyway

Do you upload to Strava?

If so you can use http://www.jonathanokeeffe.com/strava/map.php

I find it better than strava's own heatmap for my own rides/walks as you can click on the activity to find out what it was.

You can upload 'tracks' to osmandroid and see them all.

Golden Cheetah can kinda do it, but not very well, as I don't think it's a development priority for them. I only found out about it after seeing your post, and then wondering... GC currently creates a local web page (as a .HTM file on your PC). Load it in a web browser, it uses Google for maps, but needs a Google API key so is plastered with watermarks. Looks like this:

I guess if enough people badger GC's Google groups about the feature they might work on it maybe. I did also see something about an extension someone had made to do heatmaps, but couldn't find it in GC's extensions manager.

Thanks all. I'll have a look at all the above and see if anything looks like it'll work 👍

Not a heatmap but both OSmaps and Komoot allow you to search your own routes by map in the browser on a desktop or in desktop view.

The heatmap makes a pretty picture but after a few routes is maybe not really much use otherwise .

It’s possible with QGIS. You can import an entire directory of gpx files in one go and display them on a google map (other layers are available), but it has a bit of a learning curve.

Yep, was going to suggest this.

Worth the learning as qgis is capable of lots of things.

That works well for me.

Thank you

QGIS has come on a long way since I last looked at it years ago. Like you say though bit of a learning curve. I got an open street map and GPX opened in it. Tried to edit it to see if it might replace Viking GPS (which I use for editing tracks/routes) but haven't been able to edit the track yet in QGIS.
