I use my Nokia 5800 with Ovi Maps Sat Nav on an occasional basis. I'm not sure how 'free' this is...do I pay for internet usage (which is not included in my contract) when I'm using the Sat Nav? I could look at my bill but its an online one and I've forgotten my password 😳
sat nav is via gps which isn't/shouldn't need internet so should be free, only part that wont be is if maps aren't stored on the device, and it needs to downloads updates as you move, then thats data usage
Exactly as the hustler said. Also remember that using GPS location on the phone kills the battery very quickly
You do need to pay for internet usage, unless your operator has a free clause specifically for the maps (which some do I think). The free part refers to the license for Ovi Maps for which you used to have to pay. You can however download maps before hand with a PC and then you'll never have to access the internet with your phone.
ovi maps has an off line and online version, so im guessing if you dont have the internet it wont try to connect, mine runs with internet so it uses the online version when searching for postcodes, how they differ i do not know though....
Offline means you have to download a section of map or a preset route to the phone. Of course, if the route changes and that involves downloading a new section of map on the fly from the Internet, then it could cost if you've used your monthly allowance, and you'll need a good 3G connection. I prefer to have all my maps, OS and streetlevel, native to the phone so I don't need the Internet.
