Looking at getting a new 'action camera' but im well out of the loop as havent had a new gopro for about 5 years. There's some pretty good deals direct from GoPro for the Hero8 £279.99 Hero7 £219.99
Anyone had the Hero7 and 8?
Worth the extra ££ ?
Will be used for filming dinghy sailing, skateboarding, MTB.
Hero 8 is the newest and bestest, but it has a couple of downsides.
The flip out mount I thought would be the best thing ever, but instead it is wobbly and insecure. The dedicated battery is a PIA if you already have a box of old Gopro batteries that now won't work on all modes.
Hero 7 was a big step up from my old 5; it has the stabilisation feature which is worth the upgrade.
Good deals on both at the moment.
I only have the 8 so can't do a comparison with the 7.
The 8 has its downsides like anything else. I think it's ace but it's a steep learning curve getting used to the camera and editing software.
Biggest issue for me was the wind noise. I used to use a waterproof dive case but it ended up being an echo chamber.
Seems ok with a ilanksy skeleton frame and a windsock foam stretched over it.
Never used the internal battery as mine is used all day powered by a external battery pack.
I went for a 7. This may or may not have been a good idea. Happy so far. Stills are some times wrecked buy it trying to do the multiple exposure trick when things are moving. The 8 might be better in this regard
My second edit done on a PC
My first done on the phone app
To be fair the best thing so far has been trying to film newts

Go for the 7, I honestly can't find fault with it. The dedicated battery thing is the biggest no no for me.
Why?
It comes with a battery, and you charge through a USB cable. You can also run It off a USB power pack, I don't see the downside?.
I think battery swapping seems crucial. It must be less waterproof on a battery pack and it certainly can't go in a housing. Battery life is terrible
I had the 7, i sold it, the took advantage of the trade in offer with Go pro so I could buy the 8.
The 8 is better, it's not night and day but I am happy.
Not noticed the mount being wobbly.
The battery issue doesn't seem to be an issue for me I can use my spare 7 battery in the 8 with no ill effects.
I don’t understand the comments about the battery. It is a new higher capacity battery than before but it is still compatible with the older ones. I went from a 5 to an 8 and my old spare batteries work fine.
I think the 8 is fantastic. I like not having the old frame round it. I use mine in the sea as well and can just wash it under a tap whereas before I had to take the frame off to wash it or salt water would eat away at the alloy door fittings in time. I like the fact there is no removable lens cover as that used to fog up. I also like the in built mount which I have found to be really solid as it is made of metal.
The only downside I have found is that it is no longer compatible with the Remo remote so you can’t voice control it from a distance like you could before. It doesn’t matter for biking but it was useful on a paddle board.
Doh I thought some one was saying that it was a fixed battery in the 8
My main reason for buying the 7 is that I started looking at a used 4 and krept up
The old batteries work but not on 4k with stabilisation apparently as they don't have the output power of the new ones.

My gp8 vids. They get better with experience 😁
I’ve had one a few weeks and really rate it.
Love the new flip out mounts. Mine is solid, not sure about the comment above. Colour needs less adjustment in post editing than the 7, much nicer look. Love no extra case, much better battery, more usable menu system. Can’t replace the lens only negative that comes to mind at the moment
I think for only 60 quid price difference the 8 is the one.
My mounts are solid and 100,000 times easier to use than the frame.
I have load of cheap amazon batteries that work fine.
The new ui makes the camera operate less like a beta testing mule and like an actual product
I like the new metal door - yes it falls off but it's easy to open with wet hands and you can see clearly if its closed.
The lens thing bothers me though. I have a protector on.
