I have a GoPro 7 black and am tempted by the GoPro max for 360 degree recording or going for a GoPro 9 black as an upgrade.

Anyone got a GoPro max?

I haven't but I had the 7 and now have the 9. It's a step up in terms of performance and features - but not huge.

I've also got an Insta 360 which is similar to the max. Editing 360 footage is a pain and very power hungry in terms of processing which is why you don't see as many You Tubers etc using it.

I've both and they each have their place in my opinion. The protruding lenses of the Max are a constant worry for me, if only you could unscrew them to replace them. I have the gopro cover via their Plus system but that's a send away, rather than trailside/during holiday fix. The 360 of the Max allows for amazing footage and means the angle is never important which is amazing.

Lots of issues on mates go pro 9s with the sound, one friend is on camera #3 already (and thats borked too). Id wait if you want a 9.

Yep I've heard there's some issues with the 9. Good to know the difference between the 7 and 9 isn't huge so might dismiss the upgrade to the 9.

The footage I've seen on the max looks amazing. As you say the angle of recording isn't as important and a normal camera and I can imagine the footage on the trails would be good.

360 is a gimmick and the 9 isn't much of an upgrade over the 7. Plus I've seem a lot of sound issues with the 9 so hit and miss.

I've got a 9 and the Max - tend to use the 9 much more frequently for recording footage on helmet/chest/bike etc. There isn't a huge difference in static video quality between the 7, 8 or 9 - I use all three at work, and often edit footage from all three into one movie. Where the 9 is a step up from the other two is in the quality of 'on camera' stabilisation - I'm really impressed with how smooth the footage is, even when I have the camera mounted directly on the stem of the bike.
Haven't noticed any issues with sound, but I don't tend to make use of the GoPro sound anyway, other than as a point of reference for adding audio recorded seperately.

If I was choosing between a 9 and a Max only, I'd go 9, but if you're planning to keep your 7, I'd be tempted to get the Max.

Thanks all.
I'm leaning towards keeping the 7 as the 9 doesn't seem to be a massive leap in quality especially for MTB now I've researched a bit more.

Definitely still interested in the max for 360 footage. Would make videos more interesting rather than a single viewpoint.

Hopefully going to a wedding later next year and I can be the idiot with a pole on my head recording the wedding and after party. I would think it would get some great images.
