Never seems to generate the same buzz as an Apple event, but I guess that's what Apple are good at.

The new Home Hub looks cool, and the price is amazing. I want one.

The new phones are like most new phone releases these days, a little bit meh. Incremental upgrades, nothing ground breaking.

Pixel Slate, well its too late to the party really. and at £600 its missing the point of chromebooks imho.

So, anything catch your eye? Will you be buying any of this new tech?

The arrival of the oh so creepy Google Duplex ai calling tech? Lots of missed appointments, misunderstandings and general nonsense. This Vs GP surgery receptionist is not going to end well I wouldn't have thought.

Good point I forgot about that. I like the fact it can screen incoming calls.

now that was funny

can see it being very useful when the man from Microsoft rings unless it does just give him my bank details

Call screening looks good, as usual all the software features kind of come across to all of us sooner or later.

Unfortunately since I pay Google $100 a year for  G Suite account.....I dont get most of the Home functionality. Its a huge gripe for those of us who are actually paying customers! Google claim its a corporate security issue but they refuse to allow the option to turn on the functions at the admin console for those of us with private G Suite accounts.

So until they sort that out Im not buying another google home device. Might have to get an Alexa as you can link those to your google calendar etc OK.

Camera looks good on the phones.  I'm in the market for a new phone and the pixels look like they are right up with the best of the bunch.  But there's very little to separate them all at this price point.

Home hub will probably sell well.  I like the home mini I have and google assistant works well.  Sticking a screen on it and selling it relatively cheaply it s good move.

Slate looks like great tech, but with a decent processor in it (don't know if that's necessary) it's very expensive. If I was spending that much I'd want to be able to use it for VS & SQL, so it's probably just an expensive toy.

cant you just sign up for a personal account and link your work google calendar to it?

I can, but all my other google assistant/google world preferences are linked to my G Suite domain, so for just that one additional function Id lose the link from my home environment to my G Suite.

I think the omission of a camera on this device is a strange move. Google say its to alleviate privacy concerns for devices placed in areas such as the bedroom. Isn't that as good as admitting "we are not sure if we can keep our devices secure for you"?
If I had one it would live in my kitchen, and the ability to video call with family around the globe would be a much used feature. Oh well, cant have it all.

@trailwagger - there will probably be one with a camera along before long.  With a slight price premium giving you "choice".

Indeed. One of the satellite events happened at work yesterday.. massive screen with countdown clock.. room full of beers and seats.. scantily dressed Uber models tap dancing in Lycra.. you understand.

Attendance/interest? A few fat lads went down for the beers and Lycra ogling.

The rest of us?

Carried on being productive doing our day jobs..

🤣🤷‍♂️📲

When you can get close to an equivalent camera in an el-cheapo P20, the Pixel only seems to bring prompt software updates and vanilla Android, something you can get from Nokia or OnePlus now.

Samsung’s call and text screening is as good as anything now. If I was choosing a phone to spend £1000 or more on I’d probably go for the iPhone. At least if it breaks I can take it to an Apple store for an almost guaranteed instant replacement, as opposed to going through Google’s appalling Indian contact centre and then being without a phone for a month.

Not sure what it's like not but I broke a Nexus and they had one in the post next day, with a returns bag for the dead one.

Yep no idea why anybody thinks you need to hire a theatre, live stream and all that for a hardware/software launch, just leaving yourself wide open for it not actually working when you look at it to unlock it.

It may be equivalent in terms of lens and sensor ability, but what google do in the software is miles ahead of anyone. Using camera shake to enhance digital zoom? Introducing camera shake if the phone is fixed for the same result. And then there's some voodoo for low light images that I haven't got around to reading about yet.

I found exactly the same - twice! Google support was brilliant.

I had a play with a Note 9 this weekend, that'd be my choice.

I'd be surprised if the Google even sells 1% of iPhone sales so not really that surprising.

and their care factor is about zero, the pixel is about showcasing what you can do, same as the nexus range was.

Well dunno about zero, I'm sure Google would love to sell hundred of millions of phones too.

Not sure about the Nexus point either, Nexus was a technology showcase, top spec SoC's and low/mid range everything else, pure Android, an enthusiasts phone.  Pixel was designed to be an actual generation of consumer devices but I really don't know where they're going with it, and neither I think do Google so maybe you're correct in a  roundabout fashion.

Be surprised - remember Google *are* Android, so handset sales are nice, but in reality they are still biggest in software.

However, Pixel sales seem a *bit* smaller.

Yeah the NExus was sold much nearer cost though, these ones have margin on them! Which in reality is a well ehy wouldn't you people still buy them.

For the tech showcase it allows them to do an apple of pick a bit of hardware and make something for it, like the notch or the squeeze the sides bit, then let the rest of the world play with it. As the post above the software side is still the big one for them so pushing out the boundaries of android is key and this is a way to do it while not giving stuff away.

Some EE contracts at about 50-55 at the moment look fairly good if your happy with the 64gb one

Bugger, i really wanted to go back to stock android and the benefits that pixel brings, pre-order 3/xl are 500/585quid but with the p20/pro available right not at 200/300quid it really is cost prohibitive to move to the streamlined tech!
