Looking at replacing current smoke and CO alarms with Google Nest smart products. Does anyone know if it is possible to switch off/disable the smoke detector on individual devices, and use only as heat detector? Thinking specifically for kitchen use.

Apparently not. This is an issue due to the new legal requirement to have a heat detector in a kitchen that is connected to other smoke/heat detectors. AFAIK there is no solution yet.

Nope, you can't even temporarily disable the detection if you know smoke's about to be created (I had this issue with a plumber doing some soldering near one of mine, had to temporarily take it down and move it until he'd finished in the end)

Hmm... OK. Any recommendations for a smart heat sensor, or should I just not bother?

We have one (of 3) in the kitchen and haven't suffered any issues with smoke triggering it.

Am I the only one that sees the issue here ?

Mine only gets triggered by smoke in the kitchen if I'm doing a big stir fry and forget to put the extractor on max. I think I'd rather have smoke detection and the occasional false alarm then heat only.

Yep, burning toast triggers out Nest protect. You have to really cremate the toast to set it off, but does show it works....

I'd at least have thought they could be set to only activate if both heat and smoke or heat only were detected rather than just smoke.

The issue I see was actually that it's not a very sensitive smoke detector

I'd rather have one that goes off in parts of the house that shouldn't have smoke asap than ones I can burn toast under in the kitchen

The aico ones we have I couldn't even open the oven with the smoke detector we had in the dining room.(open plan but split level so a separate room for regs according to the local council)
