You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Google have launched their Black Friday sale today, and most of their kit (except for phones) has a good chunk of money off (plus 10% if you're a google one subscriber).
I've ordered a battery powered nest cam and am wondering about the potential to attach a small solar panel so I don't need to worry about recharging it every few weeks. Has anyone tried this with a nest cam? Any cautions/recommendations?
Is there a code for Google One subscribers? I've gone to add a nest to basket but no extra discount? OH wants a nest for Christmas.
Blink (amazon) have exactly this for their cameras (not tried it yet as I have one wired already)
For me the additional 10% discount was automatically applied (and deducted from the cost at checkout) without need a code.
at a guess it charges from 5V usb, so you'll need something to regulate and step down the solar panel output.
Tool station have them on sale today
A PSA for any existing nest cam users - the new Google cameras are absolute bobbins. The new cameras will only work with the Google home app - so if you have nest cams you’ll lane up using two apps.
Additionally the functionality of the new cameras is hopeless with loads of existing nest features missing e.g.
- no rewind on a live feed
- no viewing / clips through a web browser
- no ability to define motion zones
The new cameras are a half baked product and Google has made no commitment to developing the above features even if they’ve existed for years on nest.
If I was choosing again now I’d go with an alternative.
I have the Nest outdoor camera (battery) and you are able to define motion zones. As for the rewind on live feed, I don't pay for subscription that allows the 7 days of continuous recording so couldn't tell you about that.
The instructions tell you to set some cameras up using the Google home app and others with the Nest app. But I think there is a way of getting the cameras set up in the home app onto the Nest app by scanning the QR code on the cameras. I've not tried this though.
