I really don't understand what is going on here - I thought my phone photo's were being uploaded to it as a backup - just logged & apparently my photos are using 5GB of storage, but - there's all sorts of maps & random things that I have no idea where they've come from, & if I look at photos there's one image.

Confused doesn't even start to cover it!

All the bits and bobs are probably attachments from Gmail.

Some are, but one of the most recent is entitled post office & cinema, & is a map from the post office to the cinema, not even in my home town & not a route I've ever travelled. That's part of what's confusing me!

hahahahaaaaaa im going mad i tell you!!!

slightly related to the 'converting music to digital' thread, but this is a google drive issue really so searched for this thread. heres where i am right now..... PLEASE help me understand this ****in system, PLEASE!!

ok, ive spent a few days ripping all my music to flac, mp3, and my dvds to mp4. theyre all nicely sat in a folder named MUSIC on a 1TB external drive taking up it looks like around 200Gb now. yesterday i uploaded them all to 'google play music' so i can use that instead of deezer. 'play' says it finds copies of songs in their database instead of mine to save space/time i spose. fair enough, thats fine for listening purposes, but i want a proper back up of all my music somewhere else too in case of HD failure/loss etc.

i have 1Tb of 'google drive'. it says ive still got pretty much all of it left. great, google have given me 1Tb storage space where i can back up my music, thank you google. except when i tried to drag my MUSIC folder and drop it onto drive, it wont do this.
ok, ill copy and paste it. soon as i pasted it into drive, it started copying, but then after a very short period of time says theres no space. whaaat, ive got 1Tb! ok, let me google this for an answer....

right, looks like the google drive has to 'sync' with a folder on my 'c drive'. well i havent got a pc as such, i got my 1Tb of space for buying a chromebook, which has just a few Gb HD, its an internet only machine really. so whats the point of giving me 1Tb if ive got nowt to 'sync' it with?? oh and google says Drive wont work with an external drive.

more googling. oooh it seems that i CAN use an external drive as long as i have a DCIM folder in root of drive. ok..... i can do that. create a DCIM folder, put 1 document in it lets see what happens. bluddy hell its true. any other folder and i have no options. soon as i click the DCIM folder a little cloud icon appears saying i can upload to drive! BINGO!
just spent all morning now, copying my MUSIC folder into DCIM, so i can then sync it with drive. taken hours. ahhhh finished. hmmmm the cloud icons gone now and its those circular 'sync' type arrows. it now says its searching for photos and videos to sync! er...why? finds 700 new photos (where from??) and now says not enough space! AAAAARRGH!!!!

help me someone please! i just want to back up my 200GB music onto my 1TB virtual Drive so its safe in the cloud!

i realise this is a sh1t rant with no spelling mistakes, no irrational ranting, no unnecessary capitals, but dont let that fool you. i hate this ****in google system, i dont understand it. help me someone! PLEASE!!

@sadexpunk.

1. DCIM stands for digital camera images. So when google says it is trying to sync 700 photos, are you sure that it is not doing as youvaaked it too, but have confused it by putting music files in a digital image structure?

2. As you have your music uploaded to google play, why do you want to back it up again to google, you are storing it twice in the same place! That 1tb of storage is not free, I suspect you get it with your Chromebook. At the end of 2 years you will need.to pay for it. Play music is always free. I suggest if you want a proper backup, by a cheap hard drive and save it there.

No, doens't have to - it can.

Upload is the process of copying files to the remote location (ie google drive).

Sync is keeping a mirror image on google drive of the files in a designated folder on your computer. The principle being that if you delete a file locally it'll get deleted remotely. Also you can then sync to another PC as well, and you'll get that mirror image there too.

Your synced files will be uploaded, but not all uploaded files will necessarily be synced, if you have not put them in synced folders on google drive.

Weird, my google drive folder(s) are E, F and G (IIRC, might just be E and F these days).

Don't want C on google drive, it's only the operating system on there.

1. hmmm got the wrong end of the stick when i read that then, must have just been for backing up photos. but it still didnt find my videos (mp4) in the folder, and even if it did it would still have said not enough space?

2. as far as google play goes, i believe it takes all your tracks (including flac, mp3) and will play em back at mp3. it can also use a different version if it cant find the right one, say a radio edit over over a sweary version.
if i lost my HD for any reason i cant believe that google play will download everything theyve uploaded as is. i assume i wont get all my flacs and mp3s back?
as for the storage not being free, i believe it is., you just cant add to it after 3 years. thatd do for me for a back up i think.

yes, may end up buying another HD to mirror this one if i have to, its just because of the above link, i believe i can store them on Drive instead and add to them until my 3 years are up.
dont forget the mp4s too, google play music wont upload those, theyll have to be backed up somewhere too.....

thanks

Sync is keeping a mirror image on google drive of the files in a designated folder on your computer.

yep, but opinion seems divided in the search engines as to whether an external drive can be used.

Your synced files will be uploaded, but not all uploaded files will necessarily be synced, if you have not put them in synced folders on google drive

but i cant upload them.....

EDIT:
also you say google play music has them stored online yet it doesnt show in my Drive. that says 14Gb of 1Tb used, 10Gb Drive, a bit for gmail and 3Gb photos. wheres the 200Gb music files?

How are you viewing your drive?

if i go through the apps and choose the files app, when im on Drive, i can click the 3 dots top right for settings and it says 1Tb left.

if i go through chrome browser 'drive.google.com' it says it bottom left of the file structure. says 14Gb of 1Tb used, then if i hover cursor over it, it breaks it down into drive, gmail and photos.

gets more confusing as if that were possible.....

open Drive up in the browser, and i can select upload files or folders from a dropdown menu. selected folder, pointed to MUSIC on hard drive and it started. yes, now we're getting somewhere! its now got the whole folder structure in Drive, but no music whatsoever in the folders! in each album folder theres a few jpgs, probably of an album sleeve or somethings, and a desktop.ini file. NO MUSIC tho! **** hate google.

Are you just being impatient?

You say you've got 300GB of music.
How long will that take to synchronize?
How fast is your connection (up speed, not down speed).

Are you just being impatient?

its taken me ages to get this far after months of 'ill get round to it', so naaaah 🙂

i realise 300Gb will take ages to sync, it took me days to rip, and a day to swap from folder to folder on my drive. but.... the thing is, its all connected now still and the HD is quiet, nothing whirring round, nothings happening.
i tried 'uploading the same folder again, i just ended up with 2 MUSIC folders in my Drive, the second one with nothing in, the first one still with all the folders, but no content.

if its sposed to be syncing until done, its not happening at the moment. cant seem to find any settings for sync either.

connection is virgins 50Mb/s i think, and a test shows im getting that.

thanks 🙂
