I'm at 90% of my "free" Google storage allowance. So before I have another monthly subscription, someone please tell me how I can backup a families Google Photos to our own physical storage (Which we don't have currently). I know very little about computers internally so simples is good. Cheap, reliable and easy is what I would like. Especially as the family would also be doing it, so needs to be automatic!

Google have a fairly good document on that -

You would need a computer & hard drive ideally.

Personally I use the £25/year 200GB storage option.

The 'automatic' bit is the thing the cloud storage companies make so easy.

Assuming your photos are taken on a phone the £2.99/month I pay to Apple is well worth it.

Do you have Amazon Prime - if so you get unlimited photo storage with them. I back up to Apple and Amazon.

I've just given up, having been living on the 95% storage dilemma for ages and bought some whopping amount on annual subscription for what sounded like a good deal .

Just stopping seeing all the pesky warnings is a benefit but then it's clear I have just succumbed to the marketing and taken the easy option

I'd just pay but if you are keen to avoid that then just suck up the nag for the minute. Then over the next few months go through and tidy what you have. I'll bet there are lots of duplicates, blurry pics or videos you don't really need to keep.

If you do pay it can be shared amongst your family.

The cost of buying then setting up physical storage will pay the sub for quite a while and is a safer option. You'd need redundant storage in multiple locations to achieve some level of protection against loosing the lot.

i never got this to work.  downloads that wouldnt open, failed downloads, downloads that said theyd worked yet after unzipping found about 3 random photos rather than my thousands of pics/vids.  gave up in the end and i now pay the monthly fee.

id still like to sort it tho, just for a physical backup rather than accepting theyre all in the cloud until theyre not.
