Anyone know if it's worth going to the goodwood festival of speed from late afternoon onwards. Travel is no issue, only a stones throw away.

When I went, we left late afternoon! A few years ago now. Given the ticket price I'd be wanting a full day...

Free and easy to get to? Why are you asking? Unless you need to give up a days leave or something go and find out.... And yes it is good...

I take you mean at the weekend?
It gets insanely busy down the bottom of hill and all round the exhibits. There is so much to see a few hours will get you maybe 1/4 of whats actually there.
The cars run up the hill pretty much all day, but thats a small part of the FOS.
You will avoid the traffic chaos that builds up from early on leading to very very long queues on the A27. I suppose if you went late and stayed late , there are concerts and things to try to keep you spending and allow a gradual drifting away of taffic it might be OK

Take alot of food and water if you can , its expensive low quality burger van food mostly.

Went in 2010 for my one and only time so far. Left home at 5:30am to get there for 8ish. Left the site just before 6pm (still not having seen everything) as we were not far from being the last ones there on the Sunday evening.

Trust me, you'll want as much time as you can physically get there. An hour or two wouldn't even scratch the surface...

I was over Nick Mason's place today, ogling some of his cars, and he usually has something or other there, and at Le Mans, and various other circuits. He might have his 250 GTO there, he said he was taking it to Goodwood, but I wasn't sure if he meant this FOS or not.
