My poor old dad has had a load of health issues this year and is currently dealing with chemo treatment, a stoma and some knackered discs in his back.

He isn't sleeping due to lots of pain and, while the NHS have been great, nothing has really helped him.

We both brought up the idea of looking into cannabis/CBD oils the other day and I said I'd have an ask around.

Apart from me enjoying the recreational side of it for a few years I don't really know what I'm looking for...he's interested in the pain management and resulting help with sleep but doesn't want to get (too?) stoned as he's not great with feeling woozy and dizzy.

He'd obviously like this to be as legal as possible.

Any recommendations, or experience-based observations, good and bad, greatly received.

There are a few hoops to jump through, but you could try here:

https://www.sapphireclinics.com/

I have no personal experience with them but have seen their adverts on TV.

I asked my GP this month about cannabis for sleep and was told they wont consider it, though I have heard otherwise.

Cbd oils are legal but try to get from a reputable uk supplier.  Quality control can be poor i believe.  Doesn't get you stoned really

Sativex is the medical form.  Info here

The propper oils take out the 'stoned' chemicals.

I listen to these for good information on these things. This one seems like a good choice.

Sadly, despite us being big growers medicinally (and not so...) and able to prescribe, doctors are very very reluctant to do so, despite the growing evidence.

Equally, I'm sure its not going to be the cure for everything either.

So, earlier this year I found myself in loads of pain, couldn't sleep, was super-stressed and thought my life was pretty much over. This was brought on by my stage 4 cancer and fairly brutal hormone, chemo and radiotherapy. The chemo caused loads of nerve damage and my hands and feet were agony.

GP wouldn't give me any more sleeping tablets and the painkillers didn't help much (other than morphine). I looked into lots of alternative treatments including cannabis, cbd oils, etc. After reading quite a lot on the internet, I decided that I needed some old-school cannabis (not the modern skunk based stuff). I started networking through some old contacts and eventually found a source. I was surprised at the size (and cost) of the delivery! Not like buying a fiver's worth in the 80s!!

I tried smoking it but it tended to either have no effect or make me feel too disorientated and sick. Cooking it following online recipes was more successful, although it still seemed a fine line between no effect and the room spinning. I always measured amounts carefully. I think it helped with my pain but not sure it ever helped me to relax that much really.

I then did lots of reading around antidepressants and their other benefits. I settled on Paroxetine. This has been wonderful: it's reduced my pain by loads, I feel more relaxed and less stressed. Sleep is still a problem though. And the Paroxetine really knocked me out for the first week or two.

I'm not sure if that's much help! I think I'm suggesting to try cannabis if you can source some and also look into other prescribed medications that can be used in an "off-label" way. Best of luck.

CBD doesn’t get you high. You can buy CBD in Holland and Barrett or any other health fiod place.

THC is what gets you high. It's not legal to sell this in the UK. There are limited, mostly private, prescribing doctors, and they only like to do it for certain conditions when all normal medication has been tried. https://www.vice.com/en/article/3adzdv/how-to-get-medical-marijuana-uk

If I were in your dad's shoes, frankly I wouldn't worry too much about the legality. The streets of every UK city stink of weed. A sick old geezer is not anyone's top priority.

There is a lot of "woo" about all this stuff and no clear evidence that it works. But it's also a low stakes experiment - if CBD oil or "real" cannabis makes him feel better, it works. If it doesn’t, no harm done.

Good luck. You're not near Stockton are you?
