Any recommendations for somewhere to stay for a week end with 2 student daughters and a 14 year old ? Walking / pubs / possible mtb?
Cheers

Can only comment on the area south of Kinder. Edale is close to Kinder and Mam Ridge but aside from 2 pubs not alot to do. Its round corner from Castleton which has a nice high street and probably better suited to a weekend. You can go up Cavedale, Mam Tor, drive up Winnets Pass etc from there. Bakewell is nice too but my knowledge of walks is limited. Buxton if you want a bigger town. If you want less obvious maybe look at some of the dale villages like Tideswell or Millers Dale. Actually having typed all that I reckon Castleton then yiu can drive to those other places if they appeal.

Castleton is good for everything, walk the great ridge, ride down cavedale after a tour of the valley, wash down a hearty meal with a good choice of ales (real or otherwise). It can get busy, but there's a reason for that.

Hayfield's nice if you want an alternative to the whole Castleton / Hope / Edale central Dark Peak area which can get a bit overrun in summer. Kinder Scout on the doorstep for walking. Two or three decent pubs. Cracking mountain biking. Start-point for the Kinder Trespass.

Glossop as a slightly leftfield choice. Bigger town, but sat under Bleaklow for good hill walking or up the Longdendale Trail for flatter options along the Longdendale Trail. Loads of pubs and restaurants. Less picturesque and touristy than smaller villages. There's a Travel Lodge in the centre of town which is housed in a converted mill and dead handy.

Hathersage is worth a look too. Also Bamford.

Another vote for Castleton, we are here at the moment with the camper. Enough variations on accommodation. All the pubs are good and enough walking and biking from the doorstep to satisfy most people.
