We're just not getting the defintion and resolution required for comfortable viewing of strictly in the j household, and Mrs J has tasked me with sorting it.

I'd like to get rid of the leaning tower of crap (DVD player, hd recorder, sat box, amplifier...) and replace the TV.

Requirements:
Freeview (HD would be nice)
iPlayer and other online services e.g. Netflix
Ability to record to an external USB disk
Freesat - would be nice, but not essential.
32" would be big enough
DVD player not required, as I'll rip to disk and use the hdd

This is looking good at the moment - http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/samsung/ue32es5500/sams-ue32es5500

Anything else to consider? Also, will a 1000 mbps powerline setup be man enough for streaming movies from the computer?

Samsung Series 8.

My dad splashed out on a 46" beastie when he decided to stop working and it is awesome. Has Netflix, iPlayer, 3D, stuff, things, plays movies from USB, that sort of thing.

And looks nice.

Not sure they do one in 32", but they must do.

Check carefully what size you need compared to how close you sit to the screen-you will be surprised how big a screen is optimal for HD viewing. According to my room , I sit 10-12ft. away so a 46" was recommended(google it). I opted for a 42" Panny Plasma (which is fantastic) due to room considerations-window positions etc- but it does look better when sitting closer on HD-it seems to snap into focus if you know what I mean. When recording to an external drive, you often have to format it & dedicate it to the tv so is probably worth checking. Also look at soundbars, they aren't as good as full surround sound but can do a pretty good job without the clutter.

I was enthused by the recording to external hard drive but then realised that you can't record one channel and watch another at the same time. I find that very limiting. Works though - I have a small portable HDD taped to the back of my telly so no clutter. Reluctant is right about having to dedicate the HDD to the telly - cost me 33 notes so not too bothered.

I bought a new tele last year, spent loads of time researching and asking people before purchasing. My research conclusion in summary was 'buy a panasonic' & if they offer a five year guarantee for like another 50 quid, take that too. 🙂
