Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has been accused of Islamophobia after saying Muslim women wearing burkas "look like letter boxes"

he's losing his edge.... not up to his 'piccaninnies' and  'watermelon smiles' standard in reference to black people.

The membership of the Tory party will elect the next leader, who’ll become PM without anything as inconvenient as a general election. I don’t think it’s any stretch to imagine that the vast majority of the retired Sargent Majors and senile old blue-rinses are inherently racist.

So Boris, ever the morality-free opportunist, is just shamelessly pandering to those who’ll deliver him what he’s always desired. The chance to strut around number 10 pretending to be Winston Churchill

Awesome...

Next he’ll be saying the U.K. will save £350m a week if it pulls out of the EU.

Then he’ll find a benefactor to fund a campaign to the tune of £8m that wasn’t his money to donate. And flouting the rules about private funding political parties..

I also want to see him lie down in front of a bulldozer, somewhere near Slough.

I want someone to kick him in the pants.

How this buffoon and his party aren't sunk without trace is beyond me. As above, he wants his name back in the news and I'm sure we will find out soon enough.

It is rather depressing that so many in this country appear to admire people like Boris.

I’m sure that Boris’s recent meetings with Steve Bannon and his subsequent overt racism are entirely coincidental.

Next we can look forward to his column lauding the martyr to political correctness and warrior for free speech Tommy Robinson

My guess is the poster was reffering to the public in general. STW is a part of the public, but not very typical !!

I meet a few dozen every day. More than 52% easy 😉 People tend to live in a bubble. If your a tolerant switched on liberal those are the sort of people you associate with.

Not “most” then.

More like “most people in my peer group”

Suggestions of “get out more” and “see the world” probably don’t apply to either you nor your peer group then ?

🤔👅

You missed the edit cut off.... its too late to retract anything now.

I don't want to retract or need to retract anything. If it came to vote it would probably be approved. I personally would vote in favour. Am I a right wing ukip nut job ? No, my views just aren't the same as yours. Will I travel to the middle east? Absolutely

I couldn’t give a toss if a large group of people wanted to spend all day, every day dressed in ninja turtle outfits.

Seriously.. who cares?

Do we have a Jewish style definition of anti-islamic? I'm pretty sure he'd never say anything like that about our Jewish brothers, as Binners says, he's courting the bigots.

This exactly.  Boris is part of that small group that sees films such as The Gathering Storm and Young Winston as prime material for extreme wrist action.

I'm not a fan of the burka by a long shot, but do you really want to live in a world where a rich, old, fat white man, (and it's always rich, old, fat white men saying shit like this) decide what you can wear? Next binners won't be allowed to wear his tutu at the weekend.

Anyone who thinks this is a gaffe is out of touch.

This is deliberate and playing to the racist pensioners who will end up electing a new Tory leader.

Johnson will stop at nothing to be PM and when he can’t get the genie back in the bottle he will be protected from the fallout by wealth.

Anyway, they were a picture (photo) of a black letterbox & a person in a black burqua. There WAS a similarity.

And that's exactly the result Borris wanted, he's playing you like a (u)kipper there.

Its no coincidence that he wrote this column a few weeks after meeting alt-right strategist & shit stirrer Steve Bannon.

It's obvious that he's positioning himself as a polished version of trump for his next stab at (the) PM. I seriously doubt he could care less about who wears what.

sadly it seems some people fall for his bullshit every time

Indeed. Boris doesn't believe in anything other than Boris. He would say absolutely anything, without exception, to further his own ends. He's a moral vacuum.

He's obviously now taking lessons straight out of the Bannon textbook to become our very own Poundland Trump. Next week he'll suggest bricking up the channel tunnel and make the French pay for it

The man is uunfit for office adn surely thi sis now time attention turned to the racists in the tory party.  But the tories paymasters in the press will kill the story.  tomorrows headlines I bet are all about Corbyn again

Can’t believe that people think anyone criticizing the burka are racist. They are a foul garment, that no free thinking female would ever wear. They are enforced by men who are only interested in subjugating their women.

Some people on here will be praising the Islamic State next.

That’s quite a statement..

Is the burka a garment for/of oppression?

I’d be careful about broadcasting that, since there are many women who choose to wear it to satisfy thier religious beliefs.

Racist twaddle from Johnson

He suggested the Queen must love touring the Commonwealth because she's greeted by "cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies" and that in the Congo, Tony Blair would be met with "watermelon smiles".

Boris Johnson was furious when President Obama said he thought Britain should remain in the EU.

His response was to call the president "part-Kenyan" with an "ancestral dislike" of Britain.

You mean ‘religious beliefs’ made up by men and dictated to women. Sounds a bit like oppression to me. Men can be mean and manipulative, they even get victims of physical abuse and rape to think they are at fault and somehow deserve it. Getting them to wear a garment like this whilst convincing them it is their choice and religious duty is child’s play. All the while they get to strut along in their t-shirts, Bermuda shorts and flip flops as cool as they like. Funny how their religion only dictates what women should wear and not men.

Well he's played most of you very well. Have any of you actually heard / read what he wrote, and before I get accused of being a Torygraph reader PM on radio 4 felt it significant enough to read out a large chunk this evening.?

The vast majority is very sensible, ignoring for a minute the stupid comparisons he made the general thrust of what he was saying was that telling women what to wear is not acceptable, be that governments like Germany, France and now Denmark who have some form of ban. He was also saying that it was equally unacceptable that some men insist women cover up in the name of modesty.

The use of the bank robber / post box comparisons was also clearly deliberate and far from silly casual racism. It's got him headlines, probably bolstered his support from the significant number of  bigots across the political spectrum whovswallowed the whole PC gone mad argument whilst making everyone else froth at the mouth in indignation.

Our politics really is in a mess when this gets such airtime.

Binners is right, Boris is a complete moral vacuum and whilst on this occasion people have been really lazy and knee jerked he really does need to be removed from political life. What's sad is the lies he said during the referendum which he should been pilloried / prosecuted for have largely gone ignored and yet this drivel has kicked up a storm which he'll come out of stronger.

You'll now have to excuse me while I take a bleach shower for not completely condeming this horrible self serving little man.

If he'd said that they were ridiculous (as an idea) rather than the people wearing them look ridiculous, do you think that would have been any less controversial?

My underrstanding of the burka and other forms of head covering is that it's origin is rooted in trying to prevent men from being overcome with ravenous passion at the sight of a woman. Is this not the case? If that is the root of the tradition then it's offensive to both men and women to perpetuate the idea. If it's 'just something we do because we've always done it' then crack on.

Yes this was always his plan, yes this is what he was trying to achieve. He is also pandering to his racist fans though. The other entirely hypocritical point is a  paper who is currently having regular pops at Labour

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/08/02/labour-anti-semitism-row-historic-catalogue-allegations-against/

Chose to publish an article where BoJo mocked the appearance of women following religious faith.

That is what really stinks here.

The head covering is from the old testament IIRC and is exactly the same theologically as a nuns wimple and why women are supposed to wear hats in church.
it is however used as a means of oppression and there is nothing in the Koran that says it must be a burqua only that the hair must be convered
