I was partially listening to the radio (yeah, I know I know, but no bombs today) and heard an unidentified sporty type saying that his personal trainer told him that to make sure he had enough "get up and go" in the mornings, he should eat CHOCOLATE before going to bed. Something to do with "enzymes" apparently, whatever they are.

Green & Blacks here I come. 😀

It wasn't Victor Conte of the Bournville Area Laboratory Co-Operative was it?

I've been told to have honey before bed...something to do with feeding the liver over night. Have never done it though.

Can confirm chocolate before bed is nice, but its never given me get up and go. Maybe i'm just not eating enough of it!

Wasn't Colin Jackson fond of a bar before a race?

Lol @ MF. Maybe that's where i'm going wrong *ditches chocolate and rings the bf* 😀

Mol, he explained it to me at some length and sent me some stuff. He runs a health type shop in a tri centre. I'll dig it out if i can find it but hotmail on my phone is a pita.

I've been told to have honey before bed...

A friend who is big into homeopathy and the like has said a similar thing for dealing with allergies... has to be locally sourced though 🙄

Isn't the locally sourced bit about pollen allergies and the like?

Yeti that makes sense actually. Local honey will contain your local pollen, which would fit with the de-sensitisation approach to allergies.

EDIT as MF says of course it'd be pollen allergies...

Yeah, it's going to be absorbed in the liver? Only logic I can make of it right now.

A lot of training diets advise eating proper full fat ice cream before bed to help prevent muscle breakdown... one of my fav' diet tips.

That and Sven feeding the national footy team on Jaffa Cakes.

Isn't the local honey thing to do with hay fever and local local pollen?

Have a look round the world and you'll find people surviving and thriving on all sorts of stuff from people in the Arctic living on little more than seal blubber to grass eating bikers in the Midlands. What makes you feel more like getting up and going is getting up and going.

Its nowt to do with hayfever, although i know local honey helps with that.

Mol, i've found it and i'll email it to you. I'll re-read it as its been a long time.

Edit, the emails says: "The most significant organ of exercise and recovery, in fueling terms, is the liver."

Er.. and why's that good?

why is it good overnight or why the liver?

not sure of the overnight reasoning but the liver is the biggest glycogen store in the body.

(EDIT: obviously I didn't read the post above)

I thought your muscles stored it?

And of course re-fuelling is important, but why would just eating carbs not work? A spoonful of honey doesn't contain anything like as much carbs as a plate of pasta (or beans) or a recovery drink...

I'm guessing the reason that DirtyG didn't adopt this as part of her diet is that the evidence for it's benefit was underwhelming...

Full-fat ice cream AND chocolate. This just gets better and better.

Stuff your muesli.

No, it was cos he put me off with the way he gave me feedback on my diet/exercise...he told me i should be in a coma with the amount i (then) ate and exercised.

I think its more about glucose than carbs. Maybe the way the liver absorbs/stores glucose is different to carbs? Dunno. Shall i try it for a month and see?

Glucose = carbs. Honey = fructose = carbs too.

Fructose can only be metabolised in the liver, being turned into glucose and let out into your blood stream.. (I think..?). Glucose afaik can go straight into your blood and to your muscles or presumably liver too in the form of glycogen which is what your body actually stores.

I meant fructose. I'm very sleepy this morning!

Chocolate before bed can't be good for your sleep surely - doesn't chocolate contain caffeine (and lots of sugar)?

All this overnight energy from these new health foods is also good news come the winter, when we won't be able to afford to keep ourselves warm anymore...

honey = glucose & fructose in nearly the same quantities.

a 1:1 balance of glucose & fructose is thought to be ideal for fast absorption.

Full-fat ice cream AND chocolate. This just gets better and better.

Don't forget to drizzle it with honey (although I'm sure syrup is just as good)

Still sceptical. How much honey are you going to be able to eat? Glucose and fructose are available in much easier and cheaper forms.

Honey is good for you though in general for other reasons.

I didn't say i believed it, although what phil says seems to make sense. But i don't get why its taken at night, unless its somehow aided/boosted with sleep.

I'm curious now. I'm going to try it for a month and i'll see what happens.

Same bloke convinced me of the honey thing, can't remember the details though no offence molgrips but I'd trust a health shop owner/pharmacist selling something non-mainstream more than an internet stranger!

lol at the thought of molgrips tucking into a jar of honey. 🙂
it's probably only a teaspoon a night that was recommended.

Fair play, I'm not asking you to trust me, just expressing a bit of scepticism based on what little I know 🙂

Just cos someone runs a shop though doesn't mean they know any more than me 🙂

Not so cynical after all 🙂

Try it DirtyG and report back... I'd love to know the science behind it.

It was only a teaspoon before bed. I'll have to hunt at home to see if I've got the rest of the stuff he gsve me but this was years ago.

I'll start it at the weekend, seems as good a time as any 🙂 maybe I can feed you it this weekend as well? 😛

the theory of fueling up before bed is so your body has something to work off overnight while it is recovering/repairing. otherwise you are just depleting your stores further.

molgrips - i think your scepticism is healthy.

Fuelling up before bed sounds like a great idea.

My thought is that there's so few calories in a teaspoon of honey it couldn't make a difference.

I didn't plough through all the stuff DG sent me though, just the main text, so there could be something in there.

I got flamed for being iSceptical last time mind 🙂
